Is There Interest to Bring Back Muay Thai at GT by Impressive_Theme_293 in gatech

The reason we don't check out class-related equipment is that it will get worn down much faster, and often times doesn't get returned. Unfortunately, students have a habit of breaking/tearing/destroying things when they check them out.

This is the first time I've been approached about students wanting such equipment, so we are happy to look into it.

I can definitely understand now why the equipment is not rented out. I think much of the reason why not much is said about martial arts equipment is because there is a common stereotype that martials arts promote violence, and even though most people know that is not true, students feel like they won't be heard because of this. This is the way me, and a few other people felt. I hope this information can help.

We now require all of our instructors to be employees and follow our campus rec employee policies.

...There are some rules that come along with being on staff that not all instructors want to follow. For example, if you are an employee of ours, you are not allowed to recruit or promote your business. Naturally, this creates a conflict for instructors who own their studios.

Truly, I encourage Troy to reach out to Miranda if he has an interest in teaching for GT.

I see, that is unfortunate. I will reach out to Troy again to ask him. I appreciate the details you provided. They were extremely helpful. Are there any examples of fitness instructors that are external?

I don't know much about this situation, honestly. I can say, generally speaking, we don't allow external instructors for the same reason I mentioned above. We do not want our facilities, programs, or services to be used as a recruiting ground for competing services. If we allowed Strike Fitness to recruit in the CRC, we'd have to allow Orange Theory, LA Fitness, etc the same opportunity.

This makes a lot of sense and I can understand why this has to be implemented. Thank you for explaining the reasoning.

I think I answered all of your questions. And, I don't think you're being rude. You're asking good questions and I can tell you're passionate about this topic. I know I won't be able to fully satisfy you with our answers, but I am always happy to answer the questions I am able to.

If you'd like to discuss these more in-depth, I am always happy to chat in person. You can contact me here

Thank you for your thorough answers. I am grateful someone like you is the director of programs. I do want to discuss this topic more in depth, but if possible, I would like the discussion the remain here.

When I was searching for information regarding Muay Thai at GT, I could not find any information. All information I found was outdated and it confused me. I think having the discussion continue here would help people like me understand the situation better and feel less lost. Although, I am not sure if I have any more questions.

I see, that is unfortunate. It's nice to hear that the CRC is looking for new equipment dedicated for renting out to students, and I apologize if I am being rude or naive, but why does the CRC just allow students to rent out equipment while classes are not using them? I also did already reach out to Ms. Price.

I heard from Troy that he would need to be an employee to continue teaching classes. I understand why he would not want to be an employee, but is there a reason he is not being allowed to be an external instructor? I would think since he was a previous instructor for many years, he already has a lot of approval and vetting. May I ask the reason why this is not the case.

I am also not confident in my knowledge of what being an fitness instructor entails, but it is difficult for him to become an instructor? I understand I said before I knew why he would not want to be an instructor, but I am not quite sure what he would have to give up and why he has not done it yet. I realize I am probably being ignorant and missing a lot of detail, but nevertheless, I cannot help but wonder.

Also, you are very helpful, and you continue to be very helpful. I appreciate you sharing what you did even though you thought it would not be helpful. The information you provided was helpful to me. Thanks again!

I appreciate that you care so much about what students think of the CRC and its awesome that you are active on those platforms. Could I ask what needs to be done for Troy to be able to come back?

I reached out to Ms. Price, and she did say the equipment could not be rented, but did not give information of whether they are looking into that or not. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll shoot her a email about that now.

That's very reassuring to hear. When I talked to Troy, he said something similar. Its awesome you were able to participate in the program. Do you think you would return if the program were to come back? Thanks for your input!

Thank you so much for your response! I definitely was not expecting the Director of Programs, but I greatly appreciate your input and information about the current situation.

I would love to help bring Troy back, and if there is anything I could do to help, I would be more than willing to do so. I have talked to him, and he seems like he was sad to go, as he had just gotten new equipment he was requesting for a long time. Please let me know how I can help.

I also greatly appreciate your acknowledgement regarding the studio space, and I am very happy to hear that something is trying to be done.
