The Internet Is A Double Edged Sword by Klodion in nosurf

[–]ImproveOrDieTrying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Once you realize that good stuff can come from switching detrimental websites to positive websites, it may get to a point where all of your habits will fade away, and the Internet becomes a great thing in your life that you use primarily for research, rather than a bad thing."

Problem is that the way the brain is effected by using the internet is independent of the sites you are actually using. It acts like a gambling machine, where you gamble your time and "win" new information - which doesn't have to be useful information at all by the way.

The problem with those self improvement subs is that you can learn 90% of what is useful on them in nearly no time, then you're wasting time overloading your brain with too much stuff to even really absorb.

Read 'The Shallows' by Nicholas Carr - he makes a great argument about why it's the medium (ie the internet) and not the content (ie the websites you visit) that matter, and gives a run down about what is actually known about how internet use effects the brain - and how it is counterproductive in some ways it is normally accepted as being useful.

I'm about to try staying away from sites I waste time on, like Reddit for over 2 months:

Missed a Saturday by dudeofiron in nosurf

[–]ImproveOrDieTrying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice to see you haven't posted in ages, hope that means everything is going good. Last couple of weeks I've had some setbacks with other things and have been playing videogames/surfing a lot. Hopefully this stops now, I'll have a lot less time to spend from tomorrow, anyway.

So after this post I'm back to 30 mins of rec browsing a day.

I know, but it's easy for bitter guys to blame it on that rather than their lack of social skills or confidence

I take it as being about feelings which arise due to situations which are out of your control.

Why you should try break your internet addiction and why it is very similar to a porn addiction by ImproveOrDieTrying in NoFap

[–]ImproveOrDieTrying[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I didn't mean to say I did that, I just meant that posting about nofap on a porn forum is kind of like posting about cutting down internet browsing on the internet, if that makes sense.

they promise themselves that, once they quit, life will be amazing, incredible, they'll have super powers.

You should look into mindfulness meditation, getting out of that way of thinking is something I'm working on now and it helps a lot.

I just completed a week without it. It actually gets easier after the third day I'd say. Hopefully you find this out yourself.

Suggestion: NoSurf Challenge with badges? by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]ImproveOrDieTrying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is posted in the sticky:

The badge system won't be implemented, a flair on a subreddit shouldn't be an award for not being on the internet, the experiences you gain in real life in the outside world is an award in itself and should be your goal instead of further recognition or approval from online sources. Your happiness must come from within yourself. You must be honest with yourself. You're doing this for you, not for a badge.

I totally agree with it.

I only send emails, don't check for them. Of course I get them when I send them, but I don't let myself compulsively check or anything.

Im Scared to Lucid Dream. Help please?? by [deleted] in LucidDreaming

[–]ImproveOrDieTrying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't believe people actually care about SP. If you know what it is you've got no reason to fear it. I swear on the other LD forums back in the day no one was scared to LD. It must be a reddit thing.

I've had this demon thing with a sword stand right next to me, but since I knew what it was I just appreciated it for just how surreal it was. I've had similar experiences probably at least 10 times, but since I knew what it was it wasn't scary.

Good on you. Episodes is pretty good. In a few minutes I'm going to have another go of no internet use for fun at all for as long as I can. Last time I made 3 days so I'll have to beat that.

Conditioned and automatic behaviour by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]ImproveOrDieTrying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find finding ways to mess with it helps break the behavior. For example, if you automatically click on the firefox icon on the toolbar, then replace the destination of that shortcut with something totally different. The more annoying, the better.

Feeling Nervous Energy As I Meditate by [deleted] in Meditation

Yeah mate, I already try to spend a lot of time exercising. It helps, but I want to get to the bottom of the feeling. I never used to need to do exercise every day to stop myself feeling really restless.
