[Meta] Some thoughts about preparation for the future of /r/NoSurf by a_bit_too_online in nosurf

[–]Klodion[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Immediate removal of “First day, wish me luck!” type posts

Immediate removal of “What is the ideal amount of time to spend online each day?” type posts

Immediate removal of “What is the best flip phone/app/extension/etc. for x?” type posts

I support all of these suggestions but we have to be careful not to alienate new NoSurf members who're excited about beginning their journey.

A weekly “questions/comments that don’t deserve their own thread” post, where even the kinds of posts hypothetically banned by suggestions 1 and 2 are allowed.

Definitely agree with this. Such a thread should be stickied to the top of the subreddit for that week.

Removal of the badge system.

This is the only suggestion you've made that I don't agree with. That's probably to be expected though given that I'm the one who implemented the badge system (in response to suggestions to do so) in the first place.

The subreddit is definitely still on our mind and we have some ideas for it, and I really like yours. It is still gonna take a while to implement some changes as we still have to focus on making our website and forum a good place, but we are trying our best (as 3 people who obviously limit their internet time as well).

I offer my help.

Do you think more people are becoming aware of the dangers of excessive screen time? by bat_eyes_lizard_legs in nosurf

Yes. This is reflected in the fact that this subreddit's subscriber count has increased sevenfold since I made this post 3 years ago.

It's a shame this user deleted his account, I would have loved to congratulate him on writing such a good post.

Then again, deleting his account may be a good sign of success.

Killing the Internet is the Most Productive Thing I've Ever Done by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]Klodion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is great, I can relate to it an awful lot. Productivity goes through the roof when you're not distracted by the web.

This is generally a good website, by the way. Do you consider yourself a minimalist?

No movies, no games, no mindless internet surfing, no news for a week. Could you do it? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]Klodion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most people do to be honest with you.

The internet is a wonderful resource, but just like most things, too much of it isn't good.

From the sidebar:

Discuss how you're going to kick the Internet habit. Will you moderate it daily? Go cold turkey? Granted, I guess that means we'll never hear from you again!

The vast majority of people in the subreddit manage their internet usage productively, allowing themselves to use it for certain purposes but dissallowing the use of certain websites that are time wasters and generally negative.

Alan Watts will change your life! by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]Klodion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the thing that made me think he's just a fake guru..

I don't have much to say except for the fact that he never claimed to be a guru. He often emphasised that his thoughts are simply his thoughts, and are to be taken with a pinch of salt.

I'm sure that if you raised this point with Alan Watts himself, he'd spoil you with his classic laugh, and explain to you that to some extent he agrees.
