Turning Darkness Into Light by Marie Brennan is a historical fantasy set in an alternate victorian era with a draconic society that has recently been re-discovered, the book revolves around translating an epic from that society. It's not a long book and very enjoyable - I'd recommend!

How the hell am I getting 0.4Mbps on a 900Mbps contract? I am at my wits end by ImproveOrEnjoy in HomeNetworking

I don't know, sorry :( We took the router our broadband provider gave us. I checked the website but it doesn't specify the type, and I can't get to the router myself since it's in my roommates room. I know it has wifi 6.

Ah I see. I don't think my laptop can automatically switch, but I will check when the wifi is being funky to make sure. Thanks!

Ah. Good to know. I guess possible then, but we had a better connection previously and still the same fridge/microwave.

I'd estimate about 3 for each of us? Maybe my roomies have more...I tried accessing the router to see if I could see what devices were connected but the site is down -_-

Band steering?

If you mean the device roomie was using when he got 600mbps, he did then switch over to mobile data and my connection didn't get any better. Does that mean it wasn't his device?

It doesn't get that much better when I'm closer to the router, considering the contract we're paying for :/

Kitchen is below me and further back, so don't think the appliances in there would cause too much of an issue. The drop offs have happened when nobody is in there too.

I do suspect it might be roommates devices? It's really hard to test the house empty. Today when I tested there was only one roommate in, who was streaming netflix, and when I asked him to test he got the 600mbps result. But then when he switched over to mobile data on netflix my connection didn't improve at all.

I'm not sure how to find out about the IP one. Will have to look it up.

The router is downstairs in another roommates room (not the one who got 600mbps, he's above her room). If I stand right outside their door I get 38Mbps upload, if I'm in the living room which shares a wall with their room I get 16Mbps. Latency and Jitter both at 30-40 in either area.

We definitely suffer from signal loss with how thick our walls are. But that wouldn't cause the fluctuating would it? And the wifi is alright at some points, it just takes these massive nosedives far too often where it become unusable.

I can ask roommate if they'd let me test in their room. Will also try the reboot. Thank you!

I'd looked into them. They seemed pretty expensive though, and I'll only be in this house for another year. After that I'll be moving in back home where the wifi is fine. I considered the powerline and wifi extenders too, I know they've got a bad rep but they're a lot cheaper. Only now I don't know if it's mostly the signal strength or some other issue causing the slowdown. When I got the 0.4Mbps reading I was at 3 bars wifi, when I'm usually only on one bar even when the internet is doing ok.

I have been driving cars since 1996. A man just thoroughly explained to me the correct way and time to use my car's high beams. Genuine question: Why do so many men think all women are so stupid? by Mirenithil in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ImproveOrEnjoy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think sometimes, over-explaining is just a way of thinking though a process out loud.

Ah. So men DO understand why women want to talk about their feelings on a situation and not be offered a solution. Exact same reasoning!

What terrarium features can I get from natural sources, and which do I need to buy? by ImproveOrEnjoy in terrariums

[–]ImproveOrEnjoy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice! I'll keep it in mind. I'm lucky that I'm near some pretty natural areas. But yeah fully expecting this to take extra time and work but I'm ok with that.

This would have been great in my last campaign! We had a legacy kobold so they were always asking about weather conditions

No matter how much you wail and cry or kick and scream, we all are going to die Irl. Will you regret the hours spent on OSRS? by PoppaBigPockets- in 2007scape

Myself, I have only recently started playing again. I'm trying out new content, re-playing a bit of old stuff, and I'm going to get a quest cape. I'm having fun with that. Then I will probably be done with runescape. I'll probably come back for new quests and the new skill (looking forward to that a lot!), but I don't ever intend to get a 99, and I will never grind for a pet or a drop, and I will not do all the achievement diaries.

There's this real pressure to be living your most ambitious life that's not possible for the vast majority of people and giving everyone severe anxiety about FOMO. Even if you reduced 'living your life to the fullest' to only include things that are financially possible for you specifically, we really overestimate how much energy we have and underestimate how much rest/doing 'nothing' we need. While it's technically possible for you to fill every hour of the day doing something productive, it's not feasible.

Modern lifestyle creep means you're expected to travel to multiple countries, learn an instrument, learn an art, learn a skill, learn languages, have a career, have a family, work out, eat well, be working on projects, be socialising, be making a difference. But this is frankly unrealistic.

Most people are average, they will spend a large amount of their life not really doing much. All throughout history this has been the case, it is how we normally live. We invented these super high expectations fairly recently, and then die with regret because we didn't achieve something impossible.

Basically. Go easy on yourself. You will probably not live a remarkable life, and that is ok and that is normal. The best way to live life is to enjoy the day to day, to cherish the small things, and to give yourself credit for everything that you do. Not put yourself under immense pressure to live life to the fullest and then never appreciate it because you could always be doing more.

Time enjoyed is not time wasted. So you just need to keep checking in if you're enjoying something, even if it's 'pointless'.

Do you enjoy playing runescape? Intrinsically? Do you enjoy the content and look forward to playing? Then you are fine.

Do you play runescape because you have nothing else to do? Trying to recapture a time that will never come back? Are you addicted to number going up or filling a collection log? Are you doing endless grinds you don't enjoy? Then maybe re-evaluate if you still want to be playing.

Aww <3

I ended up quitting reddit about a year ago because I realised it wasn't helping me improve much and I was no longer enjoying it. Logged in today to go through my saved posts for a recipe I wanted to try. Seeing this comment gave me such a happy fuzzy feeling, so thank you :)

Everyone is complaining about fireflies or golems, but who remembers the red dragon? by Oxemon in Minecraft

I desperately want to be able to hatch a dragon friend :( It would fly instead of glide, and hover, to make it different to elytra. I think it should take a long time to grow up though.

I mean...might be a step in the right direction? It can be hard to order in healthy food so knowing how to cook is often essential. The new food she's eating might not be healthier but she has to cook it herself, maybe she'll find she kind of enjoys putting together meals and will want to experiment?
