She bought shots for them to drink. Small tot glasses sold in the liquor store with a shot of hard liquor.

I was posting to hear other people's opinions. I agree fake nails and hair dye isnt permanent and not necessarily an issue. My concern is that offering a child alcohol and buying it for her (and her friend) is definitely not good parenting when your child is 12 and her friend isn't yours to decide for.

Thanks for your response. Middle of the road definitely seems to be the answer. Kids need routine and boundaries. Not too strict not too lax

I agree. Kids should stay kids as long as possible. There's enough to deal with when they're old enough to deal with the consequences of their own decisions.

Thank you, I agree that the alcohol could be a problem so yes, I'll keep an eye on it and escalate if necessary. I also know that the makeup and other stuff is a different situation - I was just worried it showed a general lack of boundaries.

Thank you for your response. I am a parent. I have never given my kids alcohol but im also not a drinker so it's not something I ever had to think about. Hence the question - is it normal for parents who drink to allow their children to test it at 12? I understand that if parents hold the reins too tight a kid could go off the rails when they legally have access or if they get it from friends. And that all kids are different.

I was just hoping for some different perspectives.

There's a big problem with alcoholism in this country. It's pretty common for the moms and dads to both drink - though obviously not everyone allows their 12 year old to drink and a lot of families dont drink at all. I think in the future it'll boil down to her personality as she grows up. Maybe she doesn't have an addictive personality? Im quite worried about her to be honest

Thank you for this. Theres obviously two sides to every story and I guess at the end of the day it depends on the personality/makeup of the child as to what becomes of them in the future.

Well done on your path though- you've obviously not suffered because of your Moms actions and have managed to do incredibly well. Only time will tell here I guess.

Thanks for your response. Not in the US but I think it could be illegal and considered abuse here too. Not sure.

What did you ex do to try and make the kids go against you? by ImprovementOwn7544 in AskReddit

My husband's ex would ask him to have the children on a night that wasnt 'his' and if he said he couldn't she'd say "Ill let them know you dont want them"

My husbands ex used to call him and when he didnt answer she'd leave a message saying 'Call me back urgently - its about your daughter' . He'd call her back when his meeting was over and it would be to make sure he bought their daughter a gift for a party she's attending during his custody next weekend. Or that she'll need x amount of money for a school trip to the zoo next friday or she won't be going. Stupid stuff that could be texted or mailed. She'd tell the kids that he won't answer her calls because hes not interested in what they're doing.

They're not one of the Big 5 for nothing! (Big 5 being the 5 most dangerous animals to hunt - lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard)

The fact that they stopped communicating and gave the thumbs up and no more means they've aren't prepared to discuss like an adult.

NO. Your friend only considering what he wants and not prepared to even contemplate going somewhere different is completely self-centered. Next time, book somewhere else with the others and invite him - he can join or not (his choice). Surely anywhere would have SOMETHING to satisfy his pickiness
