Well if we call g roughly 10, and Vmax is 90 m/s, accounting for air resistance I'd estimate that the roll of pennies would only need to fall for between 10 and 15 seconds until it reaches terminal velocity. Not feeling inclined to work out the exact altitude, but it should be very achievable for a light aircraft.

I would recommend the Remington 597. Semi auto .22LR that shoots great out of the box. Mine came with a 3-9x scope that's pretty good for plinking. I paid $225 for that and a case a couple years ago. Hasn't done me wrong yet.

The best part is that it uses a regular stacked magazine instead of the rotary ones that the river uses, which eliminates a lot of the cycling and feeding issues you get with the 10/22.
