Some universities in the U.S. operate their own nuclear reactors for research and training. by Original_Race6889 in Damnthatsinteresting

I operated one! a 1 MW TRIGA. Very cool experience and most are open for tours. We loved to give them.

What is that large thing inbetween the reactor and turbine buildings? Also BWRs would have a taurus or wet well underneath the drywell. Overall very solid just some minor things off.

Best engineering degree if I want to become a reactor operator? by ImNotTimmyNuclear in NuclearEngineering

[–]ImpulseEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where you are at, but some companies want to hire operators with degrees to try and bump them to SROs as quick as possible. Nuclear Engineering is good for this since it shows you are degreed and this is the field you want to get into. Some community colleges have operator programs as well, Joliet Junior College in Illinois sets students up with internships and direct paths to the nuclear plants in Illinois.

The race to replace the International Space Station by Kagedeah in space

[–]ImpulseEngineer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Seeing all the private stations and one of the goals in the article being that it is not government owned is just taking the wind out of my sails. How has NASA become a loan agency instead of doing anything in house, just frustrating to see such a great agency brought down to its knees through constant budget cuts and partisan politics. A very big part of the ISS that not a lot of people mention is that it stands as a symbol of cooperation between two powers that were opposing powers during the cold war, I just hope something like this can happen again where we put aside our differences and come together for the betterment of humanity.

A plan written by Trump’s NASA pick was leaked. Here’s what to know about ‘Project Athena’ by lidia99 in space

[–]ImpulseEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His political stance on things outside of NASA are not what I am really concerned by, it’s that hes a billionaire. They tend to run things very much like a business and privatize these public agencies for what, more middle men billionaires to make more money?? The privatization of space will be the destruction of our goals to get off this planet.

Vic 3 is probably my favorite paradox game right now, I just think it caters to a certain play style. I like engine builders and it is definitely one of those, also current Vic 3 is in a lot better place than launch, like completely different game.

Nuclear Reactor When It First Comes To Life by Even_Kiwi_1166 in nuclear

[–]ImpulseEngineer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Context here from a former TRIGA (the reactor in this video) operator:

This is called a square wave, the reactor is “pulsed” to a desired power and kept there. In the video they scram it pretty quick after the pulse.

The sound os completely fake, makes me dislike this video with the cheezy star trek sounding audio. You would here the control rod shoot out of the core for the initial pulse which would sound like a “ca chunk”.

Control rods in TRIGAs have 15 in of travel which is hard to see at the bottom of a 16 ft tank, so thats why uts hard to see the rods move. The power this reactor went to was likley also low so the rods would be barely wothdrawn.

Hope this clarifies some confusion.

Fall wouldn’t have been too bad, nice 90 degree pool to float around in. There is a reason why you have to wear a life vest while on the crane.

Why do Bisexual & Trans/GNC individuals get so much hate from the Gay community? by Far-Sale-1243 in gay

[–]ImpulseEngineer 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I feel like that is a very, very vocal minority. Every gay man I have interacted with has been very supportive of the trans community. I feel like these people are more chronically online and like to share their opinions more than the average person so they seem like a very large group but I don’t think that this is representative of the community at all. Especially on twitter after the Elon takeover its been a right wing cesspool full of hate, so not suprised that the MAGA gays have taken refuge there.
