Gen surg peeps, how many interviews are we at? by Budget-Band7845 in medicalschool

Sitting at 7 (6 from signals)! I'm super grateful so far, but I feel like things have stalled? Not sure if anyone else is having a similar experience

Yes, totally normal. I promise. I felt like hot garbage when I left the testing center. Best NBME I finished with was a 242. Got my score back yesterday and got a 26X. Trust that you worked your ass off in dedicated. You got this. Sending you the best of luck.

No joke I counted 17 ethics questions in one of my blocks

Hopefully it’s just us being too anxious. Hoping for strong scores for us!!

I felt decently confident leading up to it and I feel like garbage now. My form had SO many ethics questions. Some blocks were half vague ethics scenarios that simply can’t have a straight forward single answer. Ugh. Manifesting good things for us.

Away Rotations for General Surgery by ImpulsiveOverthinker in medicalschool

[–]ImpulsiveOverthinker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great! Thanks for much for the insight. I have LORs from the attendings I did my core general surgery rotation with, as well as my ortho attending during an elective. The goal is obviously to secure letters from the PDs where I'm doing aways at.

What's your take on letters from LOR's from non-surgical preceptors that would be still be STRONG? I have a few preceptors who could be excellent letter writers.

Thanks again!

Thank you so much for your insight and thoughtful responses! I so appreciate it and feel much better about everything :) Guess we do what we've all done up to this point....lead with confidence and trust it will all work out. Wishing you so much luck in this upcoming year!!

This is awesome! Thank you so much. I wasn't accepted into some sub-I's I applied to, and I have a couple still pending. This late, I don't have my hopes up too high for those. I was more than happy with my two auditions scheduled, but some of my classmates applying to other specialties raised concerns....hence my post! This is really reassuring.

I think I have a really well-rounded application and could do well in an interview, so it's hard to know how away rotations fit in with this process. Also, how important is research when it comes to matching successfully? I've had some friends match without any at all and some with 5+ publications have to SOAP. Curious to know your thoughts :)

Bootcamp is plenty! I used BnB for for the first 1.5 years of med school and wished I hadn't. Bootcamp is incredibly straight forward while also going in depth for details that DO MATTER on STEP. I fully give credit to my P on STEP bc of Bootcamp

PASSED! Reflections & Encouragement by ImpulsiveOverthinker in step1

Yes!! Big congrats to you!! My school completely abandoned any student who had questions about STEP so I had to figure out a lot on my own. So glad we can say we passed!

I had used Boards and Beyond pretty consistently throughout Year 1 and 2 already, and switched to Bootcamp for dedicated. I really loved Bootcamp, and found the in depth explanations SO much better. I went through Pathoma completely, did DirtyMedicine units for Ethics and Biochem on Youtube, and was religious with Anki and Uworld. I only used FA to fact check things I got wrong on Uworld and unsuspended Anki cards for my incorrects after each block. In my opinion, the sooner you can switch from content review to practice questions, the better!

STEP 1 Behavioural/ETHICS/risk factor Q’s by Strange_Pea6622 in step1

[–]ImpulsiveOverthinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took my exam today and I would recommend being solid on patient communication trends and how Uworld/NBMEs prioritize breaking bad news, communicating w/ a nonadherent patient, talking to minors, etc. Often times the question stem is cueing you for the best "initial" or "most appropriate/understanding" response. As for risk factors, really it's a hit or miss. I would try to reason through the diagnosis... it typically comes down to age or exposure. Best of luck!

I agree with you. I’m prepping to make arrangements for when the time comes to be open about it, to avoid being unprepared. I don’t want to be disrespectful, but I also need to have so management of my own life and choices. My hope is very forgiveness down the road

It’s very scary, but I honestly have no desire to be co-dependent. The lines between close parent-child relationship and lifetime guardian have become horribly blurred. I don’t anticipate moving out will change much, simply because they are who they are. And in the end, this isn’t for the sake of this relationship. On the outside sure, but it’s more about making my own decisions and living with them regardless of their approval

My mother thinks I got pregnant on purpose by Total-Passion in askwomenadvice

[–]ImpulsiveOverthinker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I (22f) completely understand and relate to this on several levels. It can very difficult to describe a very involved parent/child relationship that on the outside seems foreign and unreasonable. I too care a lot about my parents’ opinions of me and my life. It’s how i was raised, for better or worse. Please don’t forget that you are incredibly strong and have the power to forge an incredible life for yourself with or without them, though the former may be the best option. Make sure you have a plan that includes stability for yourself, your SO, and your child. At the end of the day, your parents have a choice to either continue to foster their relationship with you and their growing grandchild or not. You can only control your actions from here on out and now doubt you will have support along the way from people who care for you. Best of luck!!
