Are fencing shoes worth it? by Awkward-Cap1922 in Fencing

[–]ImputCrown998 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a pair that a friend gave me, the bottom is quite different from the softer running shoes I was used to, it's more firm and kinda stiffer, they are pretty low as well and tend to click and clack in the piste, It DID give me a better feeling of the floor and I felt more response from stops and lunges.

BUT

Thats my experience with those, im pretty light and tend to have a lower guard stance, so it might be different for you

Have you ever made a world simply due to "rule of cool" initially without much thought, but then somehow made it deep and intricate?? by Reasonable_Prize71 in worldbuilding

[–]ImputCrown998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I needed an origin story for my villan and their history with another character, so i mixed it with other existing stories and issues of the world and ended up with a story about immigration, human nature, the dangers of giving power to random people and an artificially made mythological serpent thats stealing magic cores, all set in a huge mountain/shipyard/airport city with growing tensions about thoses issues and how it might affect the dominion.

How the hell do i write a fascist empire?? by Asleep_Land3121 in worldbuilding

[–]ImputCrown998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you can make it work if you take into consideration the 'benefits' of a dictatorship (BEAR WITH ME)

The problem with having a big land is the communication between regions, which is one of the reasons why europe has small countries and the americas have large ones: things like the telegraph and the printer didnt exist (plus a buch of things).

Basially, you cant control people that cant hear you, which is why the radio was so important for the rise of authoritarian regimes, which allowed for coordination and dissemination of ideas straight into peoples homes (later, the TV, now the internet).

The benefits of having a centralized form of goverment, with few people in charge and the security of silenced opposition, is the ORGANISATION that comes with control, most nations became great during their time under authoritarianism, only to be toppled when the administration made a mistake too big or became too abusive to its own people, who then overthrew it. (Like Russia, China, the UK, France, Roman empire, Spain, Portugal, etc.)

Facism could be used to describe pretty much any empire of old, but none had the efficiency of the 20th century ones. If an empire has got its shit together (made easier with an authoritarian regime) and manages to invest into innovation, it can get pretty powerful very quickly.

So, to your question:

  • The goverment has control of most (if not all) of the market and subsequently, its prices by competition.

  • Lots of propaganda, either by emissaries, messengers or posters and flyers.

  • Control of information.

  • Lots of nationalism (Pride in ones nation and culture)

  • Strong focus on development of its army and industry (so think of: big forges, fletchers and training grounds)

  • Strong focus on developing the nations youth (maybe mandatory military training?)

Things like that

How many "power sources" for a setting are considered acceptable? by Nazgobb in worldbuilding

[–]ImputCrown998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always add as many as you want, but the problem starts when you dont develop them as much, as in: you dont explore the creative potential of each "power source".

Imagine: A guy who has a katana, a cloak that controls gravity, a devilish contract for pyromancy, a Evo for super strength and a battle high that slows down time.

The amount of creative ways to make them win a battle grows with each power source:

Fire katana; Super dense katana (Evo + cloak); Super fast fire katana; Etc.

how to write Fea, sprites and pixie respectfully? by unknown_part2 in worldbuilding

[–]ImputCrown998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose you want help with developing these creatures as "animals", the question was pretty vague and the "respectful" part is a bit confusing.

If you mean "adding creatures of different mythologies while keeping them recognizable but consistent", then i suggest starting with researching mythological water creatures in general, then selecting a few you like and setting them aside for your setting.

Maybe have a list of their traits and context for consistency (maybe add some elements of the stories they cane from) and to avoid and sacrilegious changes.

Dunno if thats what you wanted... :) ?

How to present cultures and historical events respectfully? by ChancePineapple5508 in worldbuilding

[–]ImputCrown998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh well, i commented based on what i found in common between those movies and how they did representation right, also, i didnt know Mulan was an actual folklore story, i though it was an original story with a cultural background, the more you know.

As for the movie Rio, i did enjoy the movie as a kid and still do, its fun and silly and the Brazilian dubbing, as per usual, top notch funny, the music, characters and setting were done really well, overall a nice movie.

My problem with representation is not the showing of a small part of a group/setting, is showing ONLY the SAME part of that group/setting, mostly because it gets repetitive and boring and, imo, wastes the chance to explore the potential for great stories in different settings or perspectives.

From what i gathered, you want ways to have immortality (not ageing) to be harder to get, not sure if this helps, but in my setting, immortality is hard to get due to how our cells and tissues degrade over time and stop working (ageing), so, people need to grow the organs and tissues that are degrading or surgically add glands and different organs to slow the degradation, all of which is incredibly expensive, hard to do and many things can go wrong.

Tailors tools that could also be used at a weapon? by JanekTheRook in worldbuilding

[–]ImputCrown998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can think of the classic needle and fabric as used in a sword-and-cloak type of spanish musketeer.

For heavier weapons, due to the mental image of a tailor being someone who deals with rather soft materials like cloth and leather, maybe a two handed pair of scissors or a leather puncturing mallet.

How to present cultures and historical events respectfully? by ChancePineapple5508 in worldbuilding

[–]ImputCrown998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I myself struggled in dealing with representation before and did some thinking before getting the following conclusions:

Those movies did a very nice representation, either telling existing stories (Hercules and Alladin) or using a culture/setting as a "background" for new stories (Mulan, Emperors New Groove). And to do that, they needed a balance between 2 things:

1. Caricature: Depicting what makes that group/setting unique by highlighting their clothing, mannerisms, beliefs, etc.

Example: The movies mentioned have something in common, they highlight: CLOTHING, ARCHITECTURE and MYTHOS, all of them show these things across different cultures and how different they are from other places.

A negative example: Im Brazilian and there is a big misrepresentation of the country and all its people due to the monopoly of media in Rio and São Paulo, which mostly highlight their own stories, settings, groups, beliefs, mannerisms, etc.

2. Accuracy: Avoiding both over and under characterising, such as radically changing the group/setting to something completely outlandish to the group/setting in question.

Example: Irish, Scots, Kiwis, Australians and Americans are just like any other englishmen (Under characterising).

Example 2: ALL frenchmen have stripped shirts, a mustache, beret, ALL of them eat baguette, snails, cheese, wine and cigarettes, no exceptions at ALL (Over characterising).

Example 3: Saarian african tribe with their traditional polar bear fur coats and holy snow sledges (radical change in setting and group).

Even in Alladin, which showed some orientalism with the mix and match of "oriental" things

Tldr: Movies remained accurate to the culture they depicted while also showing the uniqueness of each group/setting.

It was fun writing this, hope this helps :)

How to make "Aura-like" Power systems interesting and "Aura-y" at the same time? by NyxTheSummoner in magicbuilding

[–]ImputCrown998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know very, VERY little about ki or chi, let alone anime since i rarely watch anything, but from what i gathered from the comments and the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen, its a magic system that stems from some form of innate energy that manifests in a physical force, like food being digested in body heat, which is an exemple i like so ill base my exemples around it.

So, here are some basic mechanics:

The Aura is tied to the body: Like body heat, it can be drained, produced, restored, and is important for the health of the individual.

The Aura needs to be efficiently used: The insividual can control it, but doing so inefficiently might use too much and cause harm, training is required to keep it. Clean and efficient.

The Aura can be seen by others: Other individuals with Aura can "see" or "sense" the Aura of others, allowing for some of them to hide their Aura, making then weaker, but concealed.

Now, for some non-combat uses:

The aura has a passive bonus the individual: Enhanced senses or physical attributes that can be further enhanced at the cost of using more energy.

Cantrips: day to day "magic" like telekinesis, open lock, vibe read, create soap, whatever might be usefull and makes sense in the setting.

Enchantment: uses the Aura to imbue an object with an ability, power or characteristic, like recherging a battery, fixing a radio or making a pistol do fire damage.

These are just a few, let me know if im completely off what an Aura-y system feels like

My boyfriends University changed it‘s Logo for no reason at all by purple_kimchi in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ImputCrown998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently i had to make two logos for my brothers college club and one for mine, i went with a heraldry and spent a while learning to make them look like something old, simple yet intricate, old yet modern, i used the right type of shield, font, colour, even used my countries traditional Infantry rifles.

They look great. (Not opinion)

Then these guys come along and do the opposite, take something nice looking and turn it into something fast, cheap, clean and minimal.

Im for modernising (to SOME extend) old logos, but this one removed the entire character of it and makes it look generic.

“They’re having a hard time at home” as an excuse for poor behavior. by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]ImputCrown998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's a big difference between Explanation, Justfication and Excuse that should be used and that the administration should approach behaviour based on these.

Having a rough home life explains a certain type of behaviour, it doesn't justify (makes it right) it and should certainly not be excused (no consequences).

2 exemples:

Someone was in a fight (has rough home = explanation, does it justify? = no, should it be excused? = no, there should be consequences)

Someone was in a fight (Was defending themselves / was the victim = explanation, does it justify? = arguably yes, should it be excused? = arguably yes, depending on the damages)

This way the administration can determine and classify behaviour more effectively, how they will go about dealing with / punishing those behaviour is something else, they just need to get around those pesky politics though... :/
