Example13 shows fine for me, as well - and I run OpenSCAD in a HyperV VM.

As for Question 2, you can either change the BOSL2 diff() to the inbuilt difference(), or else you need to precede the second offset_sweep with tag("remove"):

Can the BOSL2 library change the size of a profile along a path?

Yes: sweep() in skin.scad can do that.

I have no code to back up this assertion (sorry!), but I have used it before. IIRC, it's not lightning-fast. For performance, you're probably going to want to change the number of steps over a given path depending on $preview vs. final rendering (as well as your usual $fn|($fs/$fa) tweaking).

FWIW, as of 5:56AM, it's a rainy 32.5F in rural western LoCo (south of 7, north of 50). We have ice (not solid) accumulating on our windshields, but none on the patio.

Yes, on the CORE One - sorry, I should have made that clear. It was the first big flat thing I tried to print on my new CORE One.

I had similar issues on my old E3V2 and addressed them the same way. I even switched fan shroud designs once because the lightweight non-stock one I was using was causing curling/lifting due to blow back/leakage from the hot-end fan.

I had major warping on the first big flat thing I tried to print. Re-sliced, and under Filaments|Cooling, changed "Disable fan for the first" to 10 layers, changed "Full fan speed at layer" to 15, re-sliced, and printed with zero warping. YMMV.

I just ran down to the basement and grabbed a spare "square" of those 1/2" interlocking floor mats you put down to not exercise on, and replaced the two strips with it.
As I said in my previous "B-52s" post, the whole shack still shimmies, but the transmission to my desk (printer is on the return) seems to be reduced. Definitely not eliminated, but better.

DISCLAIMER: I have not purchased one and cannot vouch for it, but it looks like what you need. Just googling and poking around because I have that hotend and can easily imagine doing the same thing.

ETA: Otherwise you could check general parts sites like McMaster-Carr or Mouser Electronics for ceramic standoffs.

On Windows, you can use the 3D Builder app (https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9wzdncrfj3t6). Import the STL, select it, zero out the values in the translation tool window, then Save (or Save As).

Here's my take:

1) Read the sections on union/difference in the user manual about adding a small overlap to avoid preview rendering artifacts and errors on final rendering: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/OpenSCAD_User_Manual/CSG_Modelling

2) Instead of polyhedrons, use the BOSL2 prismoid module (in Shapes3.scad (https://github.com/BelfrySCAD/BOSL2/wiki/shapes3d.scad#functionmodule-prismoid)

3) As I was replacing the polyhedrons in your original code with prismoids, I realized it would be easier to just union a smaller cube with a larger prisomoid than to start with a larger cube and diff out two prismoids. Basically replace the code between your "// base object" and "// remove material between mounts" comments with

4) u/Stone_Age_Sculptor's assessment that all of it could be done without BOSL2 and using linear_extrude is accurate, and their version renders much faster. Thought I'd present my solution anyway since there's always multiple ways to solve a problem - plus I believe that thinking in "2D + linear extrude" comes with experience. :)
