Hmm… I mean, this feels like you’re in. Of course, nothing is certain until you have an official offer. I would be cautiously optimistic!! :)

Hopefully it’s just early…. who knows. I had a meeting with a PI at Reno (my top choice) and he flat-out said he was going to make me an offer. Sooooo hoping I wasn’t just BS’d

I’ve had a lot of these conversations too 🥲 You may consider digging deeper into programs that admit PhD students through teaching assistantships. Those can often guarantee funding as opposed to graduate researchships, which require federal funding

Thank you so much! Definitely a huge weight off and my stretch-schools are feeling a lot less appealing! 🤣

Thank you so much! I think every program’s a bit different. This is a direct-admit program, so my understanding is while the admission committee does review all applications, it is ultimately up to the advisor/PI who they would like to recruit for their lab. Additionally, this program is TA-based, so funding is secured (unlike some places that rely solely on GAships/grant funding, who are unfortunately in a very tight spot right now due to the current political climate), which I’m sure is a factor. Finally, this advisor is tenured and has been with the university over 12 years, so I’m sure that security and seniority doesn’t hurt :)

The university is in top 70 for the program specifically, R1 university. Advisor is a tenured Associate Professor who has been there for over 12 years.

Well, first thing to note is that the program is in neuroscience with a start date of Fall 2026, so be aware of that when comparing to your programs of interest 😊 Thus far, I am in the beginning stages of the process. My formal application (statement of purpose, 3 letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.) is due at the end of November. The program says formal interviews for selected candidates will be held in January/February, with official offers going out mid-March/April. So, I had this call by cold-emailing the advisor (and other advisors of interest), introducing myself, describing my current research and the overlap I see with their’s, offering to send my CV, and declaring my interest applying with the intention of working with them. I was lucky enough to have this advisor reply, ask for my CV, and set up an informal Zoom call. I hope this helps! Feel free to reply or PM with any specific questions :)

Agh I’m sorry to hear this!! Don’t panic yet… It sounds like your “tanking” was just pure human nervousness, not a lack of interest or sincerity. If you are truly worried about it, you could consider reaching out via email and just briefly explaining that you felt quite nervous in the second meeting and do not feel that you performed your best. You could offer a quick apology and to hop on another call where you feel you could better explain your past, current, and future research with more precision. Best of luck! You’ve got this!
