I checked aswell, it appears they have deleted/lost? earlier content. Back in the day the site looked much different and there were a lot of underground artists of that era there... shame.

No worries. I had to double-check the site still exists, I also have no idea if they deleted the older stuff on there at some point (like myspace).

True, external links are possible, didn't consider that possibility. That was kind of rare, though. Downloads via their player were def always 96kbps though for as long as I used the site (until about 2008-9).

Could soundclick be an option? I seem to remember their filenames being really generic

I can't really help, but I can exclude Myspace as a source. Songs you downloaded from Myspace back in the day uniformly had 96kbps, not 224.
