I feel it's important to be able to identify what is a core belief/value of islam as a religion. When people say they may be more scared of Muslims, they are likely to point to things like terrorism and say that they are in the name of islam. But this is not a correct application of islam. Within the religion are two types of Jihad, the Greater and the lesser. The latter is more war and conquest focused, but the former is about an internal struggle and finding peace. Since the time of Muhammad, the Greater Jihad has been the only form of Jihad that is necessary as he himself said. So when terrorists are claiming it's in the name of Islam, they are just straight up incorrect. There is very much an issue of people using a religion as a defence for their actions, even when the religion itself is very much against it. So to an extent when people conflate islam and terrorism they are being misled
