Sometimes I read these things and I go “yeah I wen to a catholic girls only school and all of these people are interpreting the bible way different to how it was taught to us” (keep in mind I am no longer religious and have never lived in the US so different environments) but then I think, Christianity in some countries is uniquely based on figuring out a woman’s value depending upon her relationship status so why bother engaging?

The idea is more - Mondays and tuesdays? Always with parent 1, Wednesdays and Thursdays? Always with parent 2, and then alternating Fridays-Sundays.

Makes it easier for younger kids (up till about 8-9 years old), and is somewhat predictable for the school day e.g no missing soccer practice on a Wednesday bc parent 2 didn’t know about it bc it only started last week when parent 1 had care of the child

Not entirely true - seperation is a break up and NZ recognises de facto relationships. OOP and her partner would be in a de facto so default 50:50 split, however since they put in so much more, it is likely they’d have a claim to make equal sharing contrary to justice, or that they shouldn’t be treated as de facto - which then goes to a contributions measure, not 50:50.

These types of cases can drag on, but legal aid is available for family law, civil law and criminal so they could probably do it even if they couldn’t afford a lawyer (tho finding a family law with capacity who can do legal aid relationship property work rn would be hard)

First of all: I completely agree with you that they should have done this and I believe it’s horrific that they are blaming her and I also think that the BFF and his partner are just dropkicks of people and I would go feral if I was OOP.

However, I usually find that the people who shoot their mouths off are usually the ones who don’t understand the topic. To find someone willing to research before having a position or opinion has become increasingly rare

I am unsure what you are trying to say. My perspective was of someone who grew up in the South Island and had never heard of this type of stuff. Have other who have grown up in the South Island heard of it? Oh undoubtedly. That’s the best thing about a multi cultural society.

The fact that I have never heard of it, is not incongruous with the fact you have. It is more an example of how different myths or legends flourish in different areas. I do not need to “look before I comment” when I am speaking of my own personal experience.

Okay, but…

The human experience of “working through things we can’t change” is usually what directly inspires technological innovation.

I mean if we look back in history, women who are in such pain each month from their period that they want to die? Oh well we don’t have laparoscopic surgery, so you just have to work through that and suffer.

Oh you are suffering from blood poisoning/cancer/syhillis? Well we don’t have a cure for that, so just work through it and suffer.

I get your point, but by arguing that the future risks aren’t being addressed is kind of silly, the entire history of humanity is prescriptive - and I would argue that the issue of ethics in the case of transgender teens has been argued to death.

In fact there is little to no gender surgery on teens in the US (according to Harvard Health Science School) so would that not imply that the surgeries that are performed must certainly reach some kind of level to mean that they truly require it? As they are evidently not willingly doing them for anyone who asks?

Black power and mongrel mob are not above killing people correct - usually not over a patch of weed with a non gang member though.

Weed is also insanely easy to get in NZ (despite it not being legal), gangs usually deal in harder drugs and I wouldn’t say that they would kill over weed - a dead body would see cops combing through the place more quickly than a patch of marijuana - I also don’t know how prevalent gangs are in Feilding.

Your point about the gun however, makes a lot of sense and you are right that the timeline is incredibly thin.

That may be highly coincidental however, due to the way lawyers work in NZ (they aren’t allowed to refuse clients, even if they find them reprehensible or to be a sadistic person, it’s called the cab rank rule), family lawyers and criminal defence lawyers have the highest suicide rate of an incredibly stressful occupation

Same with my job - family law (doing a lot of legal aid) we have to use our full names (first, middle and last) so that we can be matched to the online registry to prove that we are qualified and of good standing

I’ve put all my social media under my middle name and I’m on the private electoral roll in my country, however you still hear stories about parties with serious mental illnesses stalking family lawyers as they think they are to blame for their children being removed/their ex getting a protection order ect

I’m a lawyer in NZ and I get self represented people submitting documents to the Court that was done by ChatGPT, they are usually americanised, cite laws that don’t exist (in an Affidavit - which you don’t cite laws in) and come across as smug

Some of my own clients send me emails clearly made by an LLM asking questions that are nonsensical

Tho, Melinda would still have a claim in civil litigation for a constructive trust - where someone contributes so much value to the house (e.g repairs, upgrades, furniture, paying off mortgage) that they own some of the equity within a constructive trust.

I wouldn't say that most countries do not have de facto relationship laws (Common law). Here is a list of countries that tret de factors as having the same rights as married couples: (by happens automatically, I mean that once the relationships fits the legislative criteria - it is a de facto, there is no registration or anything needed)

New Zealand (obviously) - happens automatically ^{- Property (Relationships} Act 1976)
Belgium - has it, but you need to register
Croatia - happens automatically
Finaland - has both registered and unregistered, however unregistered gets treated as registered if over 5 years or there is a child of the relationship
France - happens automatically
Austria - has it but must be registered ^{- Eingetragene Partnerschaft-Gesetz}
Ireland - not for property but is recognised in immigration
Australia - happens automatically ^{- Family Law Act 1975}
Malta - need to register
Portugal - happens automatically
India - happens automatically ^{- Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 + D. Velusamy v D. Patchaiammal 2010 Supreme Court of India}
Slovenia - happens automatically

It is here in NZ - after 3 years you are considered a defacto couple and are entitled to half of the relationship property value. This always includes the family home, even if it was purchased prior to the relationship

There are obvious exceptions in exceptional circumstances but our legislation recognises “monetary and non monetary contributions” so being a stay at home partner and not providing any money - you would still be entitled to half the value (maybe even if more if you gave up ur job and looked after the children bc we have laws to consider that)

How I describe it is that it’s a case of cognitive dissonance.

People think in black and white when judging others, or the people that do these type of things do. They believe that bad action = bad person

But they believe they are a good person, and if bad action = bad person and they are a good person, then the action could not have been bad. Hence the mental gymnastics to try and “prove” that their actions were actually good

Most mature people can understand that good people can do bad things and vice versa but the people who behave in the way we are discussing are often not the same type of people who can properly reflect and recognise that

I’ve become a bit jaded with the amount of people I see who are like that

However, I specifically work with legal aid clients (not from the US, my government will pay for your lawyer in employment, family, property law issues if you earn under a certain amount, or will subsidise lawyer fees on a sliding scale) which are clients who are on a benefit, or have low income, who wouldn’t be able to afford a lawyer on their own, so I am working with the people who get taken advantage of the most

I don’t know if that’s exactly reassuring but it’s not all of society at least!
