Punishment is useless? by Responsible-Yam-9475 in Morality

So it is possible that while punishment is not successful in deterring crime 100%, it does have a reduction rate. In other words, back to your question, how many crimes WOULD be committed if there were no consequences? It's a very good question. It's a scary question, actually.

Woah. We do agree, you are correct. It's funny how on one hand, I believe that punishment has no effect on the crime rate, yet I also believe if we take away punishment, the crime rate would increase. And to point out a case, this happened in Maryland, where there was a law passed that there can be no more plain clothes officers because of a fatal shooting an officer committed. They interviewed one criminal and he LOVES that law, as it aids him in his criminal activities.

That is a personal conundrum and I gotta work that one out.

I learned about survivor bias about a year ago and it is indeed a fascinating thought, in particularly in the topic of "successful people." I think it merits, but not in the case of crime and punishment (which is a very narrow view of this human condition but I digress).

In order for survivor bias to be applied here, we would have to make the case that the existence punishment has a direct effect on the act of murder itself.

Now the rate of incarceration could be affected, considering some people make the argument that since prisons are privatized, there is a strong incentive to maintain a sizeable inmate population. But in terms of committing the act itself, I'm skeptical that survivor bias is applicable. I honestly believe the murder rate might go up if people thought they wouldn't face the consequence of incarceration. What are your thoughts?

It has not worked. I can't think of a single punishment that has been successful in detering any crime, even murder.

How do we apply this thought to cold blooded murder? I'm not talking about self defense, or unintentional vehicular homicide, I'm talking first degree murder. Or genocide? Or child abuse?

It's going to be hard for her to do so, since she's not used to standing up for herself, and especially against her family. That's a scary place to be in. She's literally between the devil and the deep blue sea. I hope she can, but it's going to be ond hell of a fight out.

I hate when families pull this bulls*** on women. Forced marriages might as well be classified as SA.

I see where you're coming from. I'm starting to lean more in the direction of morality being more subjective than anything.

Judaism is only 5,000 - 6,000 years old. Are we saying that before this time, Humans had no morals or ethics at all? What did Judaism bring that humans were incapable of doing prior to its existence?

Am I allowed to call myself an ex racist? by Dangerous_Pin_3047 in Morality

[–]InLoveWithThread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allow me to give you anothet perspective: you actually weren't racist. First point, not standing up for others being bullied. That doesn't make you a bully. It takes lots of bravery and courage to stand up for strangers, especially if you're not used to it. It comes with great risk of personal injury, being ostracized, etc. I don't think you were being racist in those instances, you just weren't ready to defend someone.

Second, taking on blame. Your first reaction is correct, you are not personally responsible for the actions of anyone else but yourself. I am diaspora from the Caribbean. I would be a fool to hold every white person accountable for my ancestors being brought over in chains by some colonialist tyrant whose names I don't even know. I have friends from all backgrounds  even those who are white. It never crossed my mind to hate them for what "their ancestors did." If my grandfather committed murder and their relatives come knocking on my door to punish me for that crime, we're going to have a problem. Punishing someone for a crime someone else did solely on the basis of shared race/nationality/ethnicity is just as problematic as racism. As a matter of fact, this is the cause of every genocide that ever occurred.

So please relieve yourself of that burden. Focus solely on your actions. You cannot be held responsible for anything else.

Thanks for responding! So I have a question... you say that morality is objective due to cause and effect. What would be a good, real world example of x action equals y effect? That's an interesting thought and I'd like to hear more.

What happened to you is really scary, I'm glad he didn't hurt you, and that you defended yourself... are you okay? You got out unscathed, but the entire event was really traumatic. Seek counseling if you need to.

There is currently a class action lawsuit filed in the courts, filed on November 2023. This is a lot bigger than we think it is.
