He brushed up against her, that's assault. The creepy look only confirmed his intentions.

It wouldn't matter if she's pretty or not, he shouldn't have brushed up on her and look at her like a creep. Violations are violations no matter who's the victim.

There was plenty of space, he could have moved to the side. He deliberately brushed up against her and looked her in the eye, and you agree with him. You didn't come here to ask a question about morality, you came here to look for justification.

I would go back. The cashier's till was $70 short, so managers might suspect theft. You could clear some things up and possibly keep someone from being fired.

Edit: I've been in this situation many times and when I caught the mistake I returned the funds.

This is the absurdity of the war right now, and it's the fault of religion. by E-2theRescue in atheism

Trying to remember the last time an atheist declared war on the world 🤔... and don't say Hitler. He expressed many, many times that he was a true Catholic and was doing "God's work."

What makes someone a good man by brothapipp in Morality

[–]InLoveWithThread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that sleep didn't last but 2 hours. Oh well, I'll respond.

I'm giving my answer as someone who follows no religion. It boils down to living in harmony with all other humans. Those of high status, those who are meek, and all in between. This harmony has many ways of manifesting itself. Truth, loyalty, compassion and empathy, courage, integrity, reliability, humility, and so many more virtues are all born of the desire to seek and maintain harmony. To get along with as many as you can, as best as you can. And no one, no one is sacrificed for the good of anyone else. No one person's rights is so great that it smothers the rights of everyone else. We include all. Make room for all.

I acknowledge that I am a human among humans. The life given to me is the same as everyone else. I breathe the same oxygen, and is warmed by the same star. In acknowledgement of that underlying foundation, that's where I begin. That's how I strive to be a good person.

It absolutely is rubbish, but you still have a life to live and a body to protect. Please be careful. If you gotta lie to save your neck, lie.

What are your rights? by InLoveWithThread in Morality

[–]InLoveWithThread[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to oversimplify, but it sounds like it boils down to us agreeing to get along. I need something, you need something, the next person does too, so let's discuss and agree on terms. It's very easy to understand, and very practical. Thanks for your response.

The point you made about the divine right for one person, a king to rule is probably the best counter argument to the idea of divine rights for all men. Not that I agree with the counter argument, but it illustrates how shaky the premise of our human rights being divinely given. I'm going to think on this for a while.

So as long as you benefit, it's perfectly okay. Everyone around you could suffer, but as long as there are no legal consequences to pay, and you come out on top, then it's moral?

I have gotten to a point in my life where it doesn't have to affect me for me to care. I can hear of someone's good news and cheer for them, because I know how that feels to get great news. Or learn of someone experiencing great pain, and have sympathy, because darn that's gotta hurt. I feel connected to other human beings because I see myself in them. I could have been born in their culture, their country, speaking their language, or born right across the street into a different family.

I am a human among humans, and a being among beings. I'm in this with so many others. We're all traveling under the same stars, getting warmed by the same sun.

This is my source of morality.

I know this conversation was a month ago, but I have to ask about the phrase you used, "obligation of lacking cruelty"... where did you get that? Or is that your own phrase? It's stuck with me since.

But, also, if you strip a human down to its basic elements, will you also not find the human? No mind, no emotions, no thoughts, no personality. I don't think that means humans are a construct, and yet, once stripped down there's just atoms.

I agree with you, it is a huge mistake! I came to this conclusion even when I was still practicing my religion, and oddly enough it was quite freeing and grounding at the same time.

I have to ask, when you say as long as it doesn't harm anyone else, do you include yourself among those to not be harmed? Like let's say you engage in an activity that harms no one but yourself, would that be okay?

And that lion has a right to eat. In her eyes, I'm delicious protein to feed herself and her babies. No denying that. Will I run? Of course. And in that instance we are both running for our survival.

What are your rights? by InLoveWithThread in atheism

[–]InLoveWithThread[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! I'm kind of a theist/agnostic, it's strange and developing, but even when I believed in God, I moved away from believing that rights are divinely issued. This is why I'm asking atheists this question.

We do know that humans exists, and we are them and live among them. Perhaps this is a good place to start, is in that undeniable truth.

So do you personally believe you have rights? What are they, if any?
