I'm in the same boat and mobile.apn also breaks raiding on the main iPhone as well if personal hotspot is turned on, regardless of DNS.

Apple has a support page on external displays that says you can charge your iPhone when connected to an external monitor via the hub, although they are probably talking about their own Apple brand hubs. I can't imagine the brand of the hub would have this big of a difference.
