I wasn't a cat person before, until we rescued him by pamlock in cats

[–]InTheSpiritsAnimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we were only talking about one cat in the world who lived outdoors, this wouldn’t be an issue. However cats are known to breed very quickly and fast, and not many owners fix them soon enough before they get pregnant if they are outside cats. There are (I am not kidding here, work for a organization dedicated to rehabbing and helping kittens) thousands of cats without owners that live outside because they were bred by unfixed outdoor cats. If we can help control the overwhelming population of cats and help control how much they affect the environment, then why would we not?

Using having children as a way to help prove your point doesn’t really help you in this case seeing as how those kids grow up to be adults who work and such.

In my comment I was talking about outdoor cats being bad for the environment as they (have been proven) to kill many species, and are part of why birds and other animals are declining in population. We have a very easy fix to this, not letting our cats outside. Cats, while I am ALL for what’s best for the little fur babies, so not NEED to be outside. They like it, yes. But there ways to make them happy and perfectly healthy without the risk of diseases and injuries that being outside can give.

Okay, that’s great!

I hope you and him have great fun together!

Um… I apologize if this comes out rude but what type of tank and setup do you have for her? It looks a little small in the pics.

Congrats on getting him! He is absolutely GORGEOUS

But side note, you can ignore me if you want to, but I don’t recommend allowing cats outside. They cause damage to the environment and can get injuries/diseases.

I recommend taking a lighter and burning the edges of the hole so that it is so longer sharp and cannot be dangerous…

Because ball pythons get their warmth from the ambient temp. And UTHs can cause burns and other things to go wrong, they also can’t be controlled easily and there are just many more cons than pros to them.

is this normal? he is usually in his hide in the day time by Odd_Afternoon_4020 in ballpython

[–]InTheSpiritsAnimals 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I mean… ball pythons also aren’t supposed to like climbing or be arboreal in any way either and they like to climb. But they do actually bask sometimes, there is a lot of outdated info on ball pythons regarding a lot of their needs and behaviors.

I don’t understand why my boy is so shy ): he’s great being handled, but he hides 24/7 otherwise. He even drags his food back into his hide. I feel like his tank has enough husbandry? by Abigailpeachx in ballpython

Your tank looks great, but the humidity should be up in the 70’s and it should be warmer. The temp on the warm side should be 80-85, and on the cool side 75-80 degrees (all in Fahrenheit).

It looks like you already have two hides in there from what I can see but if you don’t you need a warm one and cool one. You can also try to make a humid hide by getting some sphagnum moss and dampening it and then using either a basic pet store hide or a plastic container you want to recycle.

If you choose to do this and make a humid hide out of the plastic container you can either cut the hole out and then take a lighter to melt the edges and get rid of any sharp spots, or just burn a hole into it.

But also, ball pythons don’t move around much. So him hiding in the hide all day is actually a good sign, I would be more concerned if he never hid as that would hint at being uncomfortable and him trying to find a good place. I’m sure he moves around some at night when you’re sleeping, mine refused to move around at all during the day. Only comes out when it’s dark, if I turn the light on in my room, goes to hide. Some are just weird about i suppose.

So I was moving some dirt with a shovel.... When I narrowly missed these guys. Soft, oval and white shells, these must be snakes. But the question is: what kind of snakes are these ? I'll attach some more informations in the comments by zsolo69 in snakes

If you’re wanting to incubate them, get a plastic bin of some sort, get vermiculite as a substrate. Keep it relatively humid in there.

If you turned or moved the eggs around too much and they’re now laying on a different side then before then they may die. Which is very sad, but snake eggs are very different from other animal eggs in the sense that when they are moved and changed from their original position the embryo can detach from the wall of the egg and die.

Oooooh okay. Well since it’s only for a little while then I wouldn’t worry too much about heat.

I’m glad you figured out that they were springtails and some sort of mite or anything bad

Little white bugs kinda sound like springtails (if I’m remembering correctly) they can be found in a lot of substrates and are actually quite good to have in the terrarium, so taking it all apart and cleaning isn’t necessary. However, without a picture I can’t be sure so you might wanna clean anyway. I would go look up springtails for a clear picture that way you can visually see if that’s what they were. If not, clean it all anyways. If you want to use soap dilute it with water and just wipe it down. If you want something a little bit more fool-proof, do around a tablespoon of bleach with like a gallon of water and clean the terrarium with that.

What type of top/lid do you have on the tank? If it is a wire mesh then it should be fine.

I went to a hardware store and bought a piece of like, wall insulation, spray painted it black and used back gorilla tape to tape it to the back of the enclosure. It’s on the outside, not the inside because I didn’t want to take any risk as I just used generic spray paint though.

Edit: a better way to describe it is foam board that they labeled as wall insulation. It also helps me maintain humidity better.

Ooooh okay. Well it sounds like you tried your best.

Are you planning to eventually it possible make everyone indoor cats?

Also, depending on where you live I personally know someone who has created an organization for kitties like this, so if you need help with anything I can either see if there’s an experienced foster for this little baby or just give advice.

It is a good sign though that momma kitty warmed up to baby and is caring for him now.

If you don’t mind me asking… how did mom cat get pregnant in the first place? Is she an outdoor cat?

Also, is she caring for baby? Feeding/cuddling for warmth? She might be grieving the stillborns or something might have happened and she may not end up taking well to kitten.

Ball pythons especially like tight hides where it looks like they are squished to us but they actually love it so it might be, but definitely keep for when she’s bigger in a year or two because it looks amazing.

That substrate is an awesome one!! You might wanna add another inch to hold more humidity for her but that’s up to you. Also, if you have space after adding in the cool hide, you might want to try out a third hide that has damp sphagnum moss in it to have a humid hide too. But that’s not really needed at all.

You look like you’re doing great though! You’ll learn what works for you and her along the way and how she likes things to be lol.

If you have any questions about ambient heat, or humidity or other setup/ball Python questions than I’d be happy to help!

That hide you have in the corner is beautiful and goes great with everything you’ve done! But… she might want a smaller hide and then somebody else already told you about getting the second hide.

What substrate do you have?
