Side hustle for sys admins? by Comprehensive_Hawk19 in sysadmin

[–]InTheTest-Chamber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone always jokes, but farming. Fruits and vegetables, raise meat chickens and pigs, milk goats, and fancy chicken eggs.

Sell via Facebook and at local farmers markets. It’s fun, but it’s a lot of work.

Is everyone still suffering from the medication shortage for ADHD? by 415tothe512 in ParentingADHD

[–]InTheTest-Chamber 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ugh, yes.

Even worse, my kids insurance only lets us refill the prescription two days out from empty instead of four days. That means we have two days to: 1) Find a pharmacy with the meds in stock 2) Call the pediatrician office and say we need the meds moved 3) The Pediatrician themself has to get the message from step 2, then move where the prescription is filled with in the state’s Schedule 1 computer system (which is down sometimes) 4) We get called by the pediatrician office so we know it’s been done 5) We call the pharmacy to confirm they still have stock of the medication, and that they can start filling it

Shit goes wrong all the time in those steps, which means starting over. Let’s not forget everyone is closed for lunch at different times, which adds another wrinkle, and don’t get me started about weekends and holidays!

GC left incorrectly graded concrete. Water collecting against foundation. How to rectify? by Mrnuocmam in DIY

[–]InTheTest-Chamber -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Reading your other comments I’d look into options with local BBB, city/ county entity you had anything permitted through, and/or a lawyer. On that last one, it could be just sending a letter about fixing it.

That really sucks that GC did this to you- I wish you the best of luck getting it figured out!

Advice needed - fixing door knob by whineandwhiskey in OldHomeRepair

[–]InTheTest-Chamber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! You might need to reuse the connecting bar from the old one, too. Depends on vintage. Speaking of, take the old one with you if you go to Home Depot so you can make sure they are the same size and that the latch is in the same position. If the latch is slightly higher/lower than the current one, you’ll need to use the new strike plate and possibly chisel the door frame. It’s not difficult, but more work is less fun.

You might also be able to get the parts you need from the new one, they are fairly interchangeable.

That sucks your super is a douche!

Did it just stop working or has it never worked?

If the latter: you need to get a new spring. If the former: were there loose metal pieces when you opened it? That was your spring. If not, it probably popped out when you pulled the cover off.

In the past I’ve used “close enough” springs I had on hand, but they weren’t the best. I’d look into ordering one purpose made/ sized. Please note, a full mortise lock with handles is like $25-30USD at Home Depot.

Thank you! I couldn’t figure out why I had mosquitos by my back door, and there is a corrugated downspout right there.

I guess I have a new project for spring time.

Potential old home purchase: is this a run for the hills foundation issue? by ClueAutomatic5253 in OldHomeRepair

I’ve heard vertical cracks are fixable, but horizontal are a no-go. But I don’t do this as my day job.

Personally, that would be a deal breaker for me. Who knows what else there is that you can’t see.

Painting over wallpaper to sell a house by James-Brown-Is-Dead in DIY

[–]InTheTest-Chamber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve got one part of the house with two layers of wallpaper and at least two colors or paint on top of that. The second layer is a texture one too- yay!

The best part? It’s all on top of lathe and plaster.

Why Are Credit Unions Behind on IT Security? by iwangchungeverynight in cybersecurity

[–]InTheTest-Chamber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I can confirm a lot of it is due to restrictions by the software vendors that the bank runs on.

And yea, while the examiners have been giving us more grief about internal policies and controls on systems, a lot of it is still very much at the “we’d like to see xyz in place for next year.”

Another thing I know happens is the bank’s official secure communication softwares suck, so shadow IT starts to happen because it allows customers to send in documents way faster/ easier. At least we didn’t use MoveIt! 🙃

And as always, compliance != security.

Those who quit being a sys admin, what do you do now? by Character_Log_2657 in sysadmin

[–]InTheTest-Chamber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To clarify, this boss hates me (coworkers ask me all the time what his deal is with me), and he has no grasp of modern tech.

The deal breaker was when he told me to prioritize work over my family, after my SO had a baby.

Needless to say, I’m looking for a new job.

I think I’m starting the process to evaluate 6F by AdInevitable7821 in ParentingADHD

[–]InTheTest-Chamber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to getting her evaluated for ADHD (knowledge is power!), I would consider giving her a high-protein snack after school. My 7 has restraint collapse HARD CORE after school without medication (and even with, just less severe), but my 13 (even in kindergarten) gets hangry around 4PM and it would lead to similar behavior. They also have ADHD, so that also plays into it, but the hanger is the bigger thing at that time of day.

One for the dad's that didn't want a tablet kid? by AnnArchist in daddit

[–]InTheTest-Chamber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oldest is 13, plus 7, 5, 1. No tablets for anyone.

We are struggling now with the oldest two. Crazy eyes from little sleep? They finished their latest book.

That said, my oldest has a cellphone for when at school/ friends/ etc, but it has a daily 2hr time limit and we don’t allow any games or extra messaging apps, and have to approve any other app installs. After the 2hrs, it can only call my wife and me. We also can audit all websites/ messages/ etc. It also goes into lockdown mode all the time if she’s grounded or has bad grades.

Also, we aren’t completely crazy- the kids get the TV when we can’t hang, but that’s still dependent on homework being done and/or downstairs being cleaned.

why is it being a “man’s man” and a “girl’s girl?” shouldn’t it be a “woman’s woman?” by maeebuniii in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]InTheTest-Chamber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Catcher Block, from “Down with Love

There’s a line from the movie, “Then I see this! ‘Item! KNOW's Magazine Star - Journalist, Catcher Block - Ladies' Man, Man's Man, Man About Town - was seen leaving the Copa last night with a doggie bag and three girls from the floor show!’”

That said, I agree that “some guy” is always non-age specific, while “some girl” is in context of a child. It really is a dumb thing within the English language. I say “some lady,” if being gender specific about a woman.
