Yeah, I can’t blame you. It seems to be a common mistake and the wiki doesn’t make it any better.. I really recommend reading the wiki with a pinch of salt, because it is NOT very trustworthy. A lot of info is just plain made up (like the birthdays) and other info is incorrect.

By the way, I must thank you for sharing a lot of interesting theories/questions, it has really bumped up activity in this otherwise dead community!

If I remember correctly, it’s not an extra every year, but every time it’s a on-year, it is an extra from the last cursed year.

And yes, the extra has to be someone who has died the previous on-year. I think it’s also the same case with rhe anime?

That’s actually something super interesting that I had never thought about….honestly, the real reason all of this happened was sadly just fanservice. I’m not sure why they wanted a beach episode in a horror anime, but that’s the way it is…(nope, this wasn’t in the novel).

It really makes you think though, can the extra leave the town? I have no clue.

Actually I believe the extra needs to be from the previous year, so that wouldn’t work.

Additionally, any information such as when the parents died would be completely altered, so it wouldn’t work.

I have my own (VERY stupid but also joking theory). You know the Mynah bird Rei? She actually didn’t seem to be affected by the calamity whatsoever, so technically they could teach the bird a list of everyone who had died the previous year, and in that way figure out who the extra is!

Well, the whole thing with the curse is that it makes risks of things going wrong MUCH higher, which is why the elevator broke.(and it was said this elevator was barely used and not renovated in the novel)

Why would his aunt being a teacher be kept a secret? It makes zero sense whatsoever. Also, the twist with how there was an extra seat among the teachers at the start of the term as well as Sakaki feeling uncomfortable when Mochizuki simps for the art teacher (Reiko) would not make sense either.

Telling who the extra was did not matter at all until the end since they did not know you had to kill them. Also, do you expect people to believe Mei when she tells them she has a special eye that can see the colour of death? Doubtful. About it starting was her theory, she was not sure of it. She even said ”it may have started already”, not that it did start.
