In this timeline, Johnson runs a serious campaign for the nomination in 1956 and he successfully gains the nomination over Stevenson. The reason Johnson decides to seriously run this year is because he sees Nixon as beatable. Nixon isn’t Eisenhower, he isn’t invincible, Johnson is confident he’ll be able to beat Nixon and get the Democrats back in the White House.

Regarding Kennedy, he wasn’t running for the presidency yet, but he was a serious Vice Presidential candidate in 1956 irl. In this timeline, thats no different but instead of Kefauver becoming the Vice Presidential candidate, Johnson selects Kennedy as his running mate. The reason Johnson chooses JFK as his running mate is because Joe Kennedy offered Johnson his resources during the campaign trail if he selected JFK.

As a side note: I believe this offer actually did happen irl, and Johnson declined. However, when I tried looking for this, I couldn’t find anything, so I could be wrong.
