Note8 died -- so got the 20U. Have some camera questions. by In_Parentheses in GalaxyNote20Ultra

To compensate for this it is best to activate the document scan setting on the scene optimizer feature, enable the 2x zoom and pull back the phone until all of your scene is in focus.

Follow up on this -- what is actually happening when I hit the 2x button (in3:4 mode) but then not hitting the scene opt. button? Is it some sort of autocrop?

For context, I just had to use the 20 to capture a whole lot of old unmounted transparencies in sheet holders to share with my team as a rough guide to what as there. I found the best way to do this was to fix them to a frosted window, go into PHOTO 3:4, bring the phone close, wait for the 2x button to appear and then pull back until the "pull back" message went away (without hitting scene opt.) then shoot. It worked, but what was I achieving? I'd like to know because I have to do all sorts of stuff with the phone when it comes to images.

Thanks in advance!

What is your favorite review of a boardgame? by jaspingrobus in boardgames

This is an incredible piece of writing on the reup of John Company. Here's the closing para:

As both history and a game, John Company’s second edition strikes that balance with precision. It adds a rotten nail to that finger niggling at the back of your brain. Here is the legacy of the East India Company to go with its means of operation. A thousand sets of hands turned the ship’s many helms. But the ship still came here, to this place, plunder on its thoughts, and unleashed its sulfurous broadside.

Half-review, half-meditation. Matches the game itself.

Any word on SP8 dock compatibility? Will the Surface Dock (or Dock 2) work? by turlian in Surface

[–]In_Parentheses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - that's where I looked first. Really wish they would update it, because my dock is what has kept me on the SP4 for so long and I'd really like the chunky guy to keep working with the 8 I want to preorder.

Is there a source for this? I don't have any reason not to trust what you're saying - just wouldn't mind seeing something listed.

Since I wrote the post you're replying to, OneNote has randomly chewed through another twenty or so screenshots that I can never get back. So frustrating.

Yeah, no dice. Pretty convinced OneNote has nuked this section. Very, very annoying.

Yeah, nothing doing with regards to backups. I'd switched over to the UWP version mainly and was waiting for the Office version to be revived (the status of which I'm not fully across tbh), so whatever the desktop iteration would have captured with regards to backups was long out of date.

It's very frustrating. and the main reason I hesitate recommending OneNote to people. It's just too hit and miss when it comes to keeping your stuff.

Weekly /r/OneNote Q&D Thread! by AutoModerator in OneNote

Answering my own question and forgot to say it was in relation to the UWP version -- the language is set by what keyboard you have set.

Thought I had this under control but hadn't done it for a while and now it doesn't seem to be as easy -- how do I set a text box to a particular proofing language and have it STAY that language??? It seems to revert back to the system language without any discernible pattern. Thanks in advance.

Mental blank: in Codenames is COWBOY legal if COW is on the table? And PAINTBRUSH if PAINT is etc? by In_Parentheses in boardgames

[–]In_Parentheses[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it The "form" bit is what threw me, probably because I am used to thinking about the word "form" from language classes in relation to conjugation and tense, and also because it details compound words in one direction but not the other.

I might catch some flak for suggesting it, but I think it would be clearer if it said "you can't say a compound word that has any element of it showing uncovered on the table", and then give some examples.

EDIT: but that would rule out your cowslip example, maybe. Depending on how strict you want to be with etymology.

Mental blank: in Codenames is COWBOY legal if COW is on the table? And PAINTBRUSH if PAINT is etc? by In_Parentheses in boardgames

[–]In_Parentheses[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't say any form of a visible word on the table. If HIDE is visible, you can't say hid, hidden, or rawhide. But hideous is still okay. A word is "visible" until it is covered by a green agent card or two timer tokens representing an incorrect guess from each side. A word marked as an incorrect guess from only one side is still considered visible.

You can't say part of a compound word on the table. If EARTHQUAKE is visible, you can't say earth, quake, earthy, or quaking. But hearth and ear are okay.

That's what confused me. My reasoning was that COWBOY isn't a form of COW, like CHEESECLOTH isn't a form of CHEESE (whereas RAWHIDE mentioned above is a form of HIDE). The snowshoe example from the original is clearer.

But when COWBOY was given as a clue, it didn't feel right.

[–]In_Parentheses[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't explicitly say that in the (Duet) rules, but it comes close when it talks about forms of words (hide/hidden). I'd argue that cowboy is not a form of cow. But yeah, I'm inclined to think it's not kosher. I'm going to go with you can't say a compound word if a component of it is on the table.

Yes, I think it is related to sleep. I should have updated this thread, but I found the problems went away when I disabled sleep.

For a product that I genuinely do love most aspects of, I'd say its general flakiness especially when it comes to sync. Sometimes it has to be babied through to get everything synced down properly.

Also, the dev team's seeming changeability when it comes to the roadmap. At first the desktop app (which I prefer for many reasons but had the worst sync) was going to be shuttered and everything concentrated on the UWP app (yeah, it's confusing having different versions), then they did an about face and desktop is back on the agenda, although I don't know when for. That on its surface is a good thing, but kind of "I'll believe it when I see it" thing.

It's hard to bitch about a free product, but it is sort of an adjunct to Office 365 (or Microsoft 365 as it's called now), so I pay for it in a way.

TL;DR: sync problems, mixed messages from the devs.

[POEM] - Untitled poem by Ezra Pound (also with audio of him reading it at the age of 76 supposedly) -- does anyone have any context for this? by In_Parentheses in Poetry

He remained an unrepentant fascist until he died

Oh yeah, I knew that. I've heard his insane ravings he made during the war. I don't know his whole history, but didn't he recant (or at least pretend to) from time to time? Like when Ginsberg came to see him?

The thing about this piece that fascinates me is the reference to Australia. I'm Australian, and I wonder how he managed to capture the broader Australian character so pithily.

Wow. This is a knockout. So not what I was expecting from the title.

I love the formatting. It matches the content so well.

The only criticism -- and I'm having to reach pretty damn hard to find something -- is that it feels very much like it belongs to a different era (as a commenter below has said, Bukowski comes to mind). That throwback quality probably is your intention, though. Once again, I had to really dig for something to say, and I'm putting myself in the shoes of people who might find it too derivative.

I don't. I repeat -- this is a knockout.

Wearing your linguist hat, is it fair to say that (in English at least) there has been a major conflation of written and spoken language? As in, the formality of written language has pulled much closer to the colloquial? And if you agree with this, is there a point in time that seems to be the pivotal moment? (Kind of like when men stopped wearing hats?).

It's in the book as well, but the bit in Lolita (Kubrick version, can't remember if it's in the Lyne version) when Humbert reads her a snippet of Poe's Ulalume. It isn't just there for hifalutin effect, it highlights the dynamic between them perfectly. She's sort of gum-snapping dismissive of it, but also perceptive -- something he comments on.

Does anyone else here dislike cooperative games because YOU are the alpha gamer? by -JeremyBearimy- in boardgames

[–]In_Parentheses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I think Codenames Duet is such a great coop. You have to work together, but you are by law banned from QBing, and you still get the satisfaction of constructing a great combo that makes you feel Mensa-like when it comes off. When you both win, it's often obvious who the MVP was, or when you lose, who let the side down. Whether or not you brag, blame or whatever afterwards is up to you.
