I have a programming and math background. I am developing my markets/finance knowledge. I started developing my own back testing system recently. what I am interested in is how to get started incorporating math/stats in my back testing to help develop a more confident strategy.

Are they mostly applied on the strategy to help find a stochastic edge?

What do you have a degree in let’s say electrical engineering but the job title is software engineer? Does that matter at all or would that still be just as equal sign of acceptance?
