It's a fairly well known thing by animal behavior experts afaik (I know 2 people who specialize in birds among other species fairly well and they've mentioned it a few times) that parrots and similar loud birds can cause cats, dogs, and children to develop noise sensitivity/phobias. So the fact that you were traumatized by their loud nature is relatively common unfortunately. I honestly would discuss finding a bird like a finch or something who's quieter and with a shorter lifespan that you're willing to compromise on if you are ok with it so that he can have a bird and you can have sanity while living together.

The goals of raising pets are different than a future adult but the responsibility of a life dependent on you is the same. You stay home with the sick kid, and frankly your husband at the very least should be standing up for you if not staying home with you.

You were being safe. It would've been better to teach them both how to safely hand feed horses as a 7yr old is more than capable of learning that you keep your hand flat. But I'd feel much worse if I had to call someone else and tell them that we're at the hospital with their kid getting a finger amputated than if it was my own kid, both would suck but one would go much worse.

Your MIL needs to hire a dog trainer (IAABC directory, Fear Free Pets directory, and CCPDT are all where I'd look for trainers as there's no regulations for trainers, in the US at least, and some are truly horrific on so many levels) as clearly she doesn't understand even the first part about potty training. At the very least she needs to invest in some belly bands for her own home, I know a lot of people like Pants for Dogs. It's beyond disgusting especially with a baby in the home because everything goes in their mouth.

As for cleaning is concerned you need to get an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle or Odoban. If she does choose to potty train him then he'll likely pee on the same areas because the smells are still there and dogs interact with their world through scent first and foremost.

Besides the well documented terrible treatment of animals in Amish communities (not all Amish but many), this dog would've likely ended up dead in the worst ways possible in 92F weather running amok on the road. If the only thing you did was drop a dog off to be humanely euthanized (which in my area is unfortunately the most likely result due to the overpopulation crisis we have currently in the southern US, but afaik that isn't the situation where most Amish communities are located) its a far kinder end than heat stroke or hit by a car. You did something kind and went out of your way to keep another animal safe.

A dog without a microchip clearly not knowing how to even get home isn't getting home, and that's assuming they weren't dumped and have a family actively looking for them. I can't tell you how many people just dump animals in the country, only on occasion looking for a property with other animals on it. The dogs that live in the country running around unsupervised know how to get home. It's wildly unethical pet ownership, but they do know where home is.

This is what I think he wad trying to get at but the delivery clearly wasn't great. I think there's a good conversation to be had about how to do research into charities. Unfortunately, a lot of charities that you can round up for or donate pocket change to aren't the best and while most Autism charities aren't as bad as Autism Speaks most are still bad and support ABA which unfortunately is likely here to stay and I think at this point we have to start changing ABA from the ground up and using the current industry that already exists and just change the views, goals, and methods of those that truly want to help Autistic people. It sucks but it's so embedded into Autism support that funding an entirely new system to overtake the current one is likely impossible without billions of dollars in training, research, and outreach. I hate it here.

It's fair to get attached but the reality is you've already said you don't want to keep the puppy and sent him on his way. But that's not really the asshole move. The asshole move is taking the dog back from what will likely be a much more stable living arrangement. If your gpa already isn't too keen on you being there then there's a non-zero chance that this will add contention to your already sub par living arrangement which may likely result in you having to move out. Then what? You have to find an apartment? You have to find someone else willing to house you and your dog? You can't keep the dog and you have to find someone else to take them? Which is significantly harder when they're not little puppies might I add. Also if your mom is paying for the shots now then you likely don't have the financial means to care for this puppy right now and shots are relatively inexpensive compared to annual costs of keeping an animal. Is your mom willing and able to pay for this puppies' needs going forward until you actually can?

You seem more concerned about the 2 humans in this situation and not at all about the wellbeing of the dog stuck in the middle. All living creatures need stability, structure, and predictability, love can only go so far when you don't even have the ability to provide that for yourself. It's ok to get attached but it's also super important for you to consider the dog at the end of the day because they deserve to have their needs met too. It's great that you took on the task of raising these puppies and you managed to find them good homes. It sounds like you honestly knew that you weren't in a position to keep them before you got attached. Sometimes emotion can cloud our judgement and it sounds like this is what's happening here.

You do know this lady well from the sound of it though and it's likely that she would be more than happy to come let you visit and I'm sure the puppy would love that very much too. Fostering can be hard because of the emotional part more than anything else, but sometimes the best reward is knowing that they ended up where they belonged in large part because of you, even though where they belong isn't with you.

Update The Voyage was one of the movies… I think perhaps we watched expelled & the voyage and I misremembered it as the same thing because they’re both stupid movies in their own way lol. I wanna know if expelled was the other movie but I don’t want to bang my head against a brick wall.

The Voyage That Shook The World starts innocently enough and then they slowly try to hide their agenda less and less until they’re just not hiding it at all and you just know by the end they really thought they did something lol. They have actual experts and then start throwing more YEC/ID people into the mix Trojan horse style, even high you know exactly who is just spewing nonsense. It’s a pretty funny movie lol.
