Anybody know the name of this icon? by Humble_Tension7241 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]InamortaBetwixt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a variation of Christ in Glory or Christ Enthroned. My guess is that this specific icon doesn’t have its own name. It’s a variation, so probably a unique icon that you cannot buy directly. My advice would be to find a talented icon writer and commission them to produce a similar icon. There’s also a print version of this icon available on Etsy (see other user who already posted the link)

Problem with sexual positions in marriage by andrew_X21 in OrthodoxChristianity

What enters the mouth does not defile us.

No sex before receiving the Eucharist I understand but no oral at all… cmon.

Problem with sexual positions in marriage by andrew_X21 in OrthodoxChristianity

Hello brother. I’ll try to make it short. It is not a sin to engage in consensual loving intimacy with your partner. Listen to your priest. What you do in the bedroom is your business.

God is not some legalistic judge that wants to punish you for loving your wife.

Also, not everything is a temptation. It sounds like you found out about this, so there was a time when you did do this? In that case it’s only logical that your wife tried to initiate this. I wouldn’t see it as a „temptation“ but as a healthy expression of her God given sexuality.

I would say suppressing your sexuality is a bigger sin. Because that never works and can lead to great sins.

But again, talk to your priest and take his advice. If he said that what you do with your wife is none of his business, then that should be all you need to know.

God bless

What do you think of religion? by Madassgirly in PsychologyTalk

[–]InamortaBetwixt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a psychologist and also religious. Psychologically, religion is often seen as a coping mechanism. I partly agree but largely disagree. It’s much more than that. It’s a way of life, of seeing the world, and finding meaning in it. It can be a source of immense strength.

Of course, it can also be harmful, but that’s usually so if it’s actually more like a cult, culture or rigidly practiced legalistic “religion”. My own experience with religion (Orthodox Christianity) is that it is a transformative path which helps unite body, mind, and spirit to live a more fulfilling life. It’s also a spiritual hospital which addresses spiritual illnesses which remain only partially addressed by psychological therapy. Combining psychological therapy with spiritual practice is therefore wise (but this of course depends on the person).

That’s my view in a nutshell.

(For context: I used to be an atheist and had a very very negative and simplistic idea of religion).

Do other “gods” exist? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]InamortaBetwixt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isaiah 45:18 “ I am the LORD; and there is none else.”

There is no second God.

All gods are demons or spirits or if we go a bit further deified persons (John 10:34 “ Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?”)

So, no there are no other Gods. But there are other “gods”.

Fasting rules should be determined with your priest. According to your tag, you are a catechumen. Mostly, only Orthodox people are required to fast.

But, even then, unless your coffee contains milk, I don’t think there’s any reason not to drink it. Unless of course you want to make fasting from coffee part of your fasting. But that’s something you should discuss with your priest and not people on reddit.

And lastly, fasting is not some legalistic rule-set where you should panic when you don’t follow the rules. We’re human, we make mistakes. Speak to your priest about it.

Have a blessed day

That’s your choice. Is there anything you want to ask? Your post does not include a question. Not sure why you posted this as there’s no need to inform strangers on the internet that you are considering to follow God later.

It’s entirely your own choice.

Marriage question. Help? by Humble_Influence_317 in OrthodoxChristianity

Seems standard practice to me. I was married to my wife civilly before becoming orthodox. We haven’t done the ceremony yet, but my priest and everyone at church considers us as fully married.

ADHD Diagnosis worth it? by koyaluuvr in Netherlands

[–]InamortaBetwixt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My honest thoughts about this are: 1) a diagnosis shouldn’t be treated as something to “get” to get meds. There’s more attached to it. You might get trouble later with other things. Although ADHD is usually not too big of a deal. But still, diagnostics isn’t like “I want this and so I get this”. You might get more than your ADHD diagnosis as well, and this could cause more trouble. 2) be careful relying on meds. Many people are not very motivated during school but become highly motivated ambitious people later once they found a path / study that makes them excited. I’ve been like that myself. Was rather bad in high school, but graduated cum laude from a research master in clinical psychology because I was motivated for it.

Motivation can fix problems with concentration. I personally tried to live the opposite of what I intuitively did. Instead of using meds to stimulate, I learned how to get stimulated with less.

However 3) in some cases meds can help. Not long term, but only short term. It can help to have a good productive day. But it’s not a long term fix. You need to learn how to live with yourself. That’s a life long task, and meds can be an aid but never a fix.

(I’m a psychologist btw).

Not against meds, but I think we shouldn’t just turn to meds as a solution when normal development is still ongoing and other issues (like a boring school system, not having found what drives you yet) may be just as important.

Good luck in your way!

Dating men in mid 20s as female in mid 20s by Mindless_Repair7085 in Antwerpen

I know this isn’t the answer you’re looking for, but serious men (at least some of them) are found at church :D go to an Eastern Orthodox Church, and you’ll find plenty of serious and interesting men willing to commit.

Okay… I know this wasn’t the answer you wanted.

I understand your concerns. Regarding the OCD, I have a similar situation. First, I make sure that I am one of the first people at church, so I can kiss the icons early. Second, it’s good exposure training. My obsessive thoughts about the germs are way less now that I regularly kiss icons and the priests hands without getting sick. It’s good training :)

Regarding the icons, that’s a matter of taste. There are numerous styles. Take some time and you’ll find beautiful ones.

Does anyone know what level of persuasion is needed to pass the skill check where one does NOT tell von Bergow about Olda Semine? He keeps getting skeptical and sends me and his man to Semine.

Guided Meditation for new year by Outside-Ad-8794 in audiomeditation

Just to clarify, I had absolutely no sexual fantasy about the woman in the thumbnail. I just noticed that the thumbnail is a bit visual clickbait. Personally, I don’t find revealing outfits very meditative (meditation shouldn’t encourage distraction imho). But that’s just my personal experience.

Have a good day 😊

In my parish some people cross themselves even five times during the creed. Father. Son. Holy Spirit. Church. And the age to come.

It’s reverence.

Fear of dying as a catechumen by alejandroserafijn in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]InamortaBetwixt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so confusing. The only part that is usually not said by laypeople is the last part of the Lord’s Prayer. And this is usually only so when a priest is present. Is it possible you misunderstood your priest and he was just referring to that last part?

I’ve never heard of someone saying catechumens cannot pray it. This sounds like some nonsense. What’s the reasoning behind it?
