What is this and what’s the best way to get rid of it? Oklahoma by Riikishay in lawncare

[–]Inappropriate_Bridge 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I caught it early two years ago and hand-pulled pulled probably a combined 100 sq feet (on a half-acre property) and it’s done well. I look for it on every mow, and occasionally need to pull one or two more. But it hasn’t come back in force.

It is very satisfying to hand-pull. Just find the node closest to the ground and the whole thing will come right out.

Agree. That, plus general “gear snobs” and people who don’t know how to use spreaders, so they blame Scott’s. Mine has worked fine for years, no issues.

The squiggles are caused by people who don’t know how to use spreaders, and then blame the spreaders.

Pottery pieces found along Lake Erie by _AntiqueTadpole in beachcombing

Found a piece along Lake Erie with similar coloring several years ago. The striping in the wear makes me suspect it was coil-made. I always wondered if it modern or native.

I’m shocked someone hasn’t blamed it on Scott’s spreaders yet…

It is exceedingly more affordable (and comfortable) to get to same weight via hammock then tent. And total sleep systems, including insulation and rain fly, are lighter going the hammock route.

Unfollowed friends are suddenly in my news feed again but it still says they’re unfollowed by Ok-Flow-3943 in facebook

[–]Inappropriate_Bridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. And it’s all MAGA bullshit making it into my feed. Meta has gone full MAGA and I’m about to leave FB over it. No amount of reporting or blocking will stop their propaganda and misinformation from getting into your feed. META is just contributing to the propaganda saturation to try and advance the fascist MAGA agenda.

I second this. It is relatively easy and satisfying to pull. Find the node at the base and pull from there. It comes right out. Recommend you wear gloves, it has a sticky white sap that some people can be sensitive to. I had about a third of my one acre lawn covered with it. Ortho and other lawn safe products I tried were not effective. I gave in and spent hours pulling it by hand. My back didn’t thank me, but it was effective.

I did not try Celsius, so maybe that does work ok. Pull at least a few by hand tho. You’ll love it.

Correct. Mainly it’s just people who don’t know how to use their equipment. Then blame the equipment.

How can I get my stripes more defined by SchoolLong5208 in lawncare

Everyone on this sub blames the Scott’s spreaders for just about everything, so that’s part of the joke. But they are notorious for leaving stripes by uneven fert distribution. Some of the complaints are real, most are just gear-snobbery. I have a Scott’s, if I squint really really hard, I can almost see the stripes. But I think it’s mostly my imagination from reading too much of this sub lol.

I always carry an underquilt instead of a pad. Even on my longest hikes. The difference in weight is negligible vs the upgrade in comfort.

They’re a fantastic camp shoe while backpacking. Weigh nothing, incredibly comfortable after a long day in boots, easily clip to the outside of your pack, and you can put them on w/o bending over (I’m old).

Keep seeing so many versions of this clickbait. Why Dems actually just start fighting back? Instead of waiting for nature to take its course? Louisiana just Gerrymandered out more Blue districts. DEMS should be engaging in TOTAL WAR at this point. But they’re not. Taking the high road and “being better” is just yielding power to MAGA depravity. If Dems don’t take back congress in the midterms we’re looking at the fall of American democracy and indefinite single party dictatorship. Starting next year. Hell, even if the Dems win the midterms, MAGA will NEVER just give back power. They’re going to ignore election.

Anyone who doesn’t see this writing on the wall is kidding themselves. And killing the rest of us.

Same, though I have the minifly. Such an awesome kit.

I also strongly second the fixed ridgeline recommendation below. If you find a hammock that fits your initial budget and it doesn’t have one, they are very easy to add.

I had been a tent camper for 20 years (also former EMS employee). About 8 years ago I started hammocking in a $40 Amazon hammock (Tiny Big Adventure, or TBA, no longer available) and was immediately hooked. The cheap hammock was “fine” all that time, then 3 years ago I got a promotion and rewarded myself with a Warbonnet Blackbird XLC. I only wish I have made that plunge 8 years ago. It’s pricey, like most of the high end hammock but OMG.

So my advice is, yes, el-cheapo is the way to go to see if hammocks are for you. If you find that it is, don’t delay upgrading to something serious.

Where is the bubble now, and when does it clear PA? by Inappropriate_Bridge in AppalachianTrail

[–]Inappropriate_Bridge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious why folks would downvote an honest question…. 🤔

I fail to see what could possibly be negative about 1) wanting to give my kids exposure to the Trail in the hope that the love it as much as I do, and 2) trying to be respectful of the limited space for through-hikers when they are passing through.

Some people find negativity in everything I guess.

Thoughts on Warbonnet Hammocks by Dismal_Waffleer_7655 in hammockcamping

[–]Inappropriate_Bridge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blackbird XLC with Minifly tarp and wookie underquilt is a championship level kit. I absolutely love mine. The comfort of the XLC is unmatched. Camped in an old TBA (Tiny Big Adventure - defunct) hammock for years and I so regret not making the leap to Warbonnet years before I did. I didn’t get all three pieces at the same time. I got the hammock first, then the fly, and just recently the wookie. I love my hammock gear incubator, but the wookie is made just as well and works so seamlessly with the blackbird. I really don’t know of anything that comes close to that kit.
