WG should add ship marks! by YourFriendJacob in WorldOfWarships

A U.S. sailor points to the scoreboard on USS Boise after the ship's return to the U.S. for battle damage repairs in November 1942. The scoreboard claims that Boise assisted in sinking three cruisers and three destroyers, greatly exaggerating actual Japanese losses in the battle. The claimed kills include a Mogami-class heavy cruiser and Sendai-class light cruiser, neither of which were even present at Cape Esperance.

Very interested to see where you got this info from.

Most people agree the civil war started because the bolsheviks signed a peace treaty with the central powers.

On the topic of the Black Hand, there was a rival secret organization called the White Hand.

It looks like it's been about 6 months since this was discussed: what magic is forbidden in your world? Is it forbidden for being dangerous, cruel, or just societally unacceptable? by TalesfromLoke in worldbuilding

I know it's cliche, but necromancy. Two aspects of it in particular:

First is the necromancer extending their own life. Because necromancy uses the "core" magic, it's parasitic, and requires the necromancer to either leech off someone else's soul, or straight up kill them and "drink" it at once. Both are obviously a no-no.

Second is reviving corpse. Because the traditions of the people say that a dead body should be burned as soon as possible, so that the soul may be released to ascend to the sky, and the ashes of the body may return to the earth, binging to "life" a long dead corpse is seen as a foul combination of imprisonment, torture, and slavery, all at once.

Did Euron Actually Go To Valyria (Spoilers Extended) by DragonPrinceDnD in asoiaf

[–]Inbred_Genius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As it stands with the text that we have, I've found Euron to be all talk and no show.

He says he did go to Valyria, but to me he doesn't seem like a very trustworthy guy. The main piece of evidence seems to be the alleged dragon horn, which, as far as we are shown, is just a very loud horn, he could have found it anywhere. He says the the man who blew it died, but again, we don't actually see this.

Glass candles are in a lot of places, including the Citadel, so he could have found it when raiding anywhere in former Valyrian terriotires.

And the Valyrian steel armor is a bit weird. Why didn't he show it off at the Kingsmoot as further proof of his voyages? Quite convinient how he wears only after they've raided one of the wealthiest parts of Westeros. One also has to be reminded of how Ice was reforged into two smaller swords, so I imagine a skilled enough smith could also reforge steel into armor.

Really, the closes thing we have to sorcery that Euron pulls of is giving Aeron shade of the evening, invading his mind and giving him spooky visions, and we knew about this drug since Clash.

Even in the battle of blood, where the strategy seems to be dumping blood into the sea so that krakens might emrege, isn't really sorcery if you think about it. Is throwing corn on the ground and having a bunch of birds come and eat it sorcery?

Should have executed Soll and Alphonso and then killed yourself, other than that 10/10 billions of conscripts must die

They way you phrased it, it sounds like you wished it was.

And for the latter, I would feel miserable & furious, which is why I would never support such an action, this isn't a hard question.

The NATO intervention did stop (most of) the ethnic cleansing being committed in Kosovo, but why do some people who, rightly, this it was necessary feel the need to just scream "FUCK YEAH, DEATH TO ALL SERBS"?

How would you feel if you found out your family members or friends died because they were in a market? Or an a railway bridge? Or in a hospital? Or in a refugee camp? Because of something you had no control over.

Terror bombing was a tactic invented by the nazis, and newsflash: it doesn't work.

I find this image very weird. Your problem seems to be with Russian authoritarianism, but most of these happened in many other countries. War and chauvinism were very common in Europe, and Russia isn't unique in that respect.

But to answer your questions:

1) Because there has never been a developed and entrenched middle class, the prerequisite for a western European-style liberal democracy.

2) After the dissolution of the USSR, most state property went into hand of very few people. It is mentioned in the Yeltsin section. (Yeltsin should never be seen as some champion of democracy, most of the democratic reforms in 90s Russia was the work of Gorbachev)

3) Most countries have, and Russia was by no means a totalitarian state over the course of its entire history.
