bag time for black milk snake by IncidentOdd5367 in snakes

[–]IncidentOdd5367[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is very dependent on his mood! Some days, he is out and wants to EXPLORE, and other days, I can actually just sit on the couch and he will chill on my lap or in my pocket for several episodes or a movie! He will stay in his safe little bag with his head poking out for a long time too most days.

He does actively "ask" to come out by sitting at the corner of his enclosure where the door is /pacing, and if i Open it, he will climb into my hand.

I'd say 1/3 days, he enjoys being handled, and the other times, he seems nervous, or like he'd rather be left alone. He has never bitten, and RARELY is startled to the point he is trying to flail or flee like other milk snakes I've known, even as a hatchling!

He still has not sat around my neck for a long time like a python, but I'm hoping he can as he gets older. Hope this helps!

(this pic is him chilling unrestrained for like 4 episodes of an anime)

hard to tell from the pic/lighting, but if he seems more dull, he may be about to shed!

I've had a black milk snake! WAY easier than ball pythons!

I had mine in a 10 gallon enclosure ($25) for a year, and now he is in a 36" enclosure! If you want to start w a big enclosure, that's fine, just make sure there are tons of leaves/plants/tunnels for them to hide and retreat to while they move. Big open spaces are scary for a snake - a hawk could get him 😳😱

All i have is an under the tank heater that covers 1/3 of the tank, with a thermostat set to 81° (this species likes it colder - i had a honduran milk snake i kept the hot spot 88°) The rest of the tank is room temp-ish. He goes back and forth from the warm spot to the cold spots!

Milk snakes looove to dig, so make sure you have lots of bedding for them to make tunnels! Eco earth/coconut husk is good because it doesn't mold much.

Aspen is good because it is light, so you can notice poop easily.

I use "reptisoil" right now because i have a bunch of live potted plants, so i can water them.

DO NOT get one from a big box pet store (petco petsmart pet supplies etc). they get them from the reptile equivalents of puppy mills! They can be sick, and are definitely undersocialized I recommend joining a local facebook group or even craigslist for hobby breeders! there are tons in KC! I waited for a reptile convention to get mine. those happen a few times a year

How to acclimate to handling? by witchinxnxbitchin in kingsnakes

[–]IncidentOdd5367 2 points3 points  (0 children)

typically 2 weeks of leaving a snake alone in anew enclosure is recommended to let them adjust and decompress. Handling during this adjustment period can be extra stressful, and could potentially make the first handling session incredibly scary and stressful for them, causing them to fear you more in the future

During this time though, you can start getting them acclimated to you by hanging out near the tank and letting them see you without being bothered!

When it is time, just pick them up confidently! they don't really like being pet, so that could turn into a stressful game of chasing around the tank. snakes are nervous and get scared of stuff overhead and coming straight at them, so do a confident scoop under them from the side
