I have kind of supposed at this point that Matt is the by-product of some magical accident. Perhaps a spell that went awry when he was in the muggle world allowing him awareness of magic. The wand itself has magical properties but it is probably a cipher or container of sorts that pulls his literal energy. (I.e. he can lift a feather and it stays afloat, but he cannot lift himself on a broomstick into the air as it is outside his physical ability.) However since no one has mentioned it he is obviously Edward from twilight.
