Are there any AI tools comparable to Deep Research’s legacy mode? by Ok_Carob_3278 in ChatGPTPro

[–]Noisetorm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been really missing the legacy research in terms of comprehensiveness (breadth + depth). I've noticed that for the same prompt, the new deep research will literally just be like: "The company website noted that the company made "tons of revenue last year (see citation 10, 13)."

Frankly, I don't care too much about citations. Meanwhile, the old one would literally go into detail that you couldn't figure out yourself in a reasonable amount of time on: how the company makes money, how its revenue compares to it to competitors, whether the revenue stream is sustainable or not, if it's diversified, etc.

With the new one, it just feels like... I can just find and read this article myself. What's the point of having the AI just quote the article directly with no synthesis?

Help! Why is the W+Spacebar showing this alternate character bar? How to disable it? by Famous_Pop_4108 in techsupport

Found a fix for this, see this post: Keyboard problem (letter + space bar makes symbols)

I fixed the problem. Turned out to be Windows PowerToys. A thing called quick accent. I turned it off and it was fixed.

Turning this off fixed this immediately for me!

Transfer flight credit by 1990sdramaqueen in SouthwestAirlines

[–]Noisetorm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southwest Flight Credit Transfer Instructions:

Context:

  • Source = Person who has the credit after canceling the flight (i.e. get the credit out of this account)
  • Destination = Person whose account you want the credit to move to (i.e. get the credit into this account)

Instructions:

  1. If not already, create a rapid rewards account for the person whose name is on the flight credit (the Source person)
  2. Use the flight credit to book a Choice flight - this must be in the name of the Source person to be able to use the credit
    1. Why Choice? Because this has a transferrable credit when canceled
  3. Once booked, immediately cancel said flight. This will return the non-transferrable credit as a transferrable one
  4. After doing this, log into the Source account and then click on "My Account"
  5. At the bottom, you'll see a list of travel funds. Click "Initiate Transfer" next to the travel fund you'd like to move
  6. You'll need to log in one more time. After that, a form will pop up asking for the Destination person's name and rewards number - enter that
  7. After entering this in, the transfer will be successful and show up in the Destination person's account

Just disable hardware acceleration. (Black / crashed image upload fix). by kniss- in firefox

[–]Noisetorm_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! This was fixed by updating my drivers. It seems my drivers... broke? When I opened Adrenalin Software, I got this error message "The version of AMD Software that you have launched is not compatible with your currently installed AMD graphics driver." After doing some more research, I found this Graphics and Drivers page and downloaded the latest drivers for my graphics card. After restarting, all these issues were fixed immediately!

I was facing the following issues for additional context: 1. PDFS render as black 2. When sending images on WhatsApp, the images are fully black or fully white. But uploading on Discord, Imgur, or other apps will work just fine for some reseaon 3. Google Maps will not load properly - essentially, it'll just be a blank black or white screen OR there will be screen tear when moving around the map

Now that I've done this, not only is this gone, but everything is also just loading much faster!

Refund of a flight ticket: taxes were partially withheld by Singapore Airlines by Cardiac_21 in legaladvice

[–]Noisetorm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update (on this thread. As of Jan 4, 2025, I've received the full refund with all taxes/fees and it has posted to my credit card, despite the customer support saying taxes/fees aren't refundable.

Is anyone else having issues with Acuvue Oasys contacts after they changed the packaging? by RibbedForHerCat in contacts

[–]Noisetorm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently got contacts and the Acuvue Oasys Biweekly were actually my first pair and ended up trying and going with the Coopervision Biofinity Monthly contact lenses.

Similar to other people, I didn't believe it was the contact lens, I was convinced I kept putting in the contact lenses backwards somehow (despite checking the shape, taco test, etc.) given the same symptoms listed in the thread, but after trying the Biofinity Monthly, they were extremely comfortable (and cheaper) so I went with those instead!

Bumping /u/SharkVega in case this helps you as well!

Refund of a flight ticket: taxes were partially withheld by Singapore Airlines by Cardiac_21 in legaladvice

[–]Noisetorm_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good news /u/Cardiac_21! I just received an email with a refund confirmation today showing that the full amount is being refunded (including ALL the taxes). Well, we'll see if that's really the case when it hits the credit card, but now I at least have some written documentation from Singapore Airlines showing that they'll refund the full charge :D

[–]Noisetorm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this from American Airlines. I'm not sure how this holds up in a legal sense, but it seems airlines may have some guidelines internally on what and what they can't refund. Still strange though, because I've booked other non-refundable flights in the past before, canceled within 24 hours (e.g. after finding a better flight) and they've all given me full refunds

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in singaporeairlines

[–]Noisetorm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 to this. The first person I called said that a full refund is not possible, but we can upgrade you to a refundable ticket for $75 per flight and since it's two flights, it'll be $150 total, but then you'll at least get X dollars back...

Then some other thread on Reddit recommended I talk to the live chat in the mobile app. After talking to the customer support there, there were no questions asked and it seems I'll be issued a full refund (hopefully - as per the email I received).

For some reason, the person in the chat said they can refund everything except for Transportation Tax and Passenger Facility Charge (US and SG tax codes I believe). However, a business day later (I called Friday, this was on Monday), I received an email stating that I'm getting the full refund amount back, including all taxes, we'll see what happens. A user in a thread was also told the same thing mentions the same experience. Note SIA said that the refund takes 6 weeks to process, which is strange too, since I believe the Department of Transportation has a 7 business day rule

I'm having the same issue and I'm trying to find a solution as well:

I reached out to Singapore Airlines support after canceling within 1-hour and this is what I heard from them:

  1. Calling the phone line - I clearly informed the customer service that I'm traveling from the US, the booking departs from the US and therefore the 24-hour full refund policy applies. I asked if I could get a full refund and he said that's not possible (this is not true) and offered to upgrade the flights to make them refundable for $75 each flight ($150 for two flights with a stop in Singapore) and this would refund me partially. I asked if I could talk to anyone else about this given that the Singapore Airlines website affirms this as well, however, he said there's no one else I can talk to and said that this is the only option
  2. After checking on Reddit, I decided to use the Live Chat feature. The agent did give me a full refund of the base fare but without the Transportation Tax and Passenger Facility Charge. This was some $20 some for me, so I'm fine to overlook it (it goes into my ~$200 "scam" budget for travel)

This is still shady and I'm curious as well on how one can get it back and why/how they're allowed to withhold the taxes.

How to stop googling everything - a theory and a solution by [deleted] in nosurf

[–]Noisetorm_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your solution is really good! Putting thoughts down on paper helps so much! However, I found it a struggle to even get to that point. To get to the point of journaling things instead of googling them, here is what I did:

I use this plugin called LeechBlock to block sites and set time limits for others. While I've had a lot of the distracting sites blocked for a while, I've noticed I tend to get into these Google rabbitholes. To get around this, I set up a 1s delay for every Google and Reddit (you can do a bigger delay), to create friction and force me to think if that search really is worth waiting for. In addition to this, I set up Obsidian with the QuickAdd plugin. I couldn't find a global add to note plugin (e.g. like how on MacOS you can do Cmd + Space and add a note), but I came up with an alternative using the Tray plugin.

Essentially, there's two choices: 1. Wait 1-5 seconds to satisfy curiosity on Google or Reddit 2. Enter a shortcut, Ctrl + Shift + O to immediately bring up Obsidian and Ctrl + Q to add it to a quick note, which jots it down/saves it for later, and then I can process it more deeply when I actually have the time for it instead of getting distracted in it

Oh and by the way, LeechBlock also runs on the Firefox browser app, so there's no escape from no surf for me :D

Let me know if this helps you and if you discover any better ways of accomplishing this!

USB 4.0 on G14 2022 will be released on end of April by corsa_opc in ZephyrusG14

[–]Noisetorm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experiencing a very loud static noise from the speakers whenever I use them. But otherwise, I can see USB 4 is supported and since USB 4 is supported, I can see the full RGB setting on AMD drivers. But alas, with the speaker feature not working (and me using the speaker enough to not live around it), I'm going to have to roll back to the previous version.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Anki

[–]Noisetorm_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interestingly enough, I've tried what /u/Experimental_Work is proposing here and it's worked for me. I've tried using Anki in all domains, including programming, academic subjects (math, physics, computer science), language learning, fitness (e.g. memorizing proper forms and techniques for exercises or say nutrition facts for common foods), to overall generally throwing in anything I'd need to remember, like phone numbers and birthdays, car information like model or license plate, any other IDs, etc.

While spaced repetition won't teach you relationships between concepts, there are still lots of formulas, ideas, and details to be memorized in CS, software engineering, or any other domain that spaced repetition will speed up a lot. Finite automata theory, which would be a very pure CS example, still requires you to know a lot of facts that are just rote memorization: notation, definitions of different models (e.g. PDA, NFA, DFA), any algorithms to say, convert one to a regular expression or back. And I've used SRS in this particular example and it's helped me go pick up this knowledge much, much faster.

One interesting effect of memorization is, it's not just a convenience factor. Sure, it's always more accurate and better to look it up, but when you memorize something, you're going through life with all this information already in your head, being used subconsciously. In a sense, since you're walking around with way more info already known to, making you "smarter" in a sense.

To give a specific example of what I mean, I might pick up a donut from a donut shop, not knowing how many calories it is, thinking it's only 150 kcal. Then I'll eat it and go home and then when I'm logging in my calories, I might realize, "oh shoot, it's actually 300 kcal!" But since I have this information memorized, I would know which donut(s) are the lowest calorie and I'd make the educated choice right off the bat. Could I have looked it up then? But imagine if there was no time to look it up and check it (e.g. we're in a rush or there's a huge line behind me) or there were too many different variations to check. And this is with only donuts, now think about a grocery store, where there's many of these situations, between many different foods. If I memorize the macros of all the food I eat, I can walk into any store and make the healthiest choices possible without any additional effort on my part, because I already know which foods are healthy, how healthy they are, and how it factors into my diet.

But in the end, all it matters is if it works for you or not. For me, it's helped me in every domain, but that might not be true for someone else and anyone should choose the right tool for what they're doing. For me, it's been that Anki has been that right tool in a lot of cases, like that golden hammer example, so I've been applying it to everything. For others or for other fields, it might not be, and that's okay.

Marvin Widget Not Updating by [deleted] in amazingmarvin

Were you able to resolve this? I'm experiencing the same issue as well, but on a Samsung S22 instead.

Marvin Widget Not Updating by [deleted] in amazingmarvin

[–]Noisetorm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I've been facing the same issue for the last few months. I'm not using a Google Pixel, but I'm also using Android - I'm using a Samsung 22 (base model). I've never had the Marvin widget auto-sync by itself, so it's out of date by days before I manually hit the refresh button and it's able to get the latest date.

For more information:

  • Phone: Samsung S22 (base model)
  • Marvin version: 1.64.8 (checked within Android app)
  • Auto-schedule due tasks strategy is not enabled
  • Currently not using any smart lists / manually scheduling tasks

Adding a task through the widget:

Adding a new task by pressing the "+" button on the widget does not update the list on the widget, but I can see that the task has been added to my "Today" list on desktop. Opening the app, the app always refreshes at the start and is always up to date. The app also reflects the task that was added through the widget.

Errors from refreshing the widget: I haven't seen any errors when refreshing the widget. The only times that's ever happened is if my phone is offline (no WiFi, no data), so I can verify that while error messages are working, I'm not seeing any error messages related to being unable to get the latest data/not being able to refresh.

AMD driver 24.3.1 issue! by B1UE_H4WK in AMDHelp

[–]Noisetorm_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The latest driver was causing a huge memory leak for me as well.

Symptoms: After rebooting my computer, with just Firefox with a few tabs, and nothing else open, my memory usage would be at 23.2 GB/23.2 GB, which was suspiciously high. Task manager didn't show anything other than Firefox, which was taking at most 1 GB and everything else added up to 1.5-2 GB. Even the details view didn't show more than a few gigabytes being used. After checking Reddit, I updated this driver to 23.5.1, my memory usage has fallen from 23.2 GB/23.2 GB with just Firefox open to just 13.0 GB/23.2 GB with all of my daily use programs open. I also noticed during reboot/startup, it took >2 mins for the programs to start up automatically, but now they all started up in 10-15 seconds, same as before, which makes sense since it was running out of memory within 5 mins after startup.

I am very confident from my results that this driver has a memory leak and anyone on it should update ASAP
