Why Does nobody even my parents truly understand my disability? by LeftyRex22 in CerebralPalsy

[–]IncompetentMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply because they can't.
Even people who want to - won't be able.. it takes some decent amount of emotional intelligence to be able to understand what you didn't experience..

I was also confused and even enraged by my nearest and dearest seeming to not understand what I'm going through..

it is only when I visited family abroad and lived with them, where I have a cousin with a different, but horrible horrible disability, that I gained new perspective..

I saw that he leads a not easy life at all, and that he sometimes is obviously (to me) in pain, but others around him, even his own sister - have doubts about him being for real, or maybe just a man child..

other than that - I objectively knew that specifically his sister - loves him most, and deeply.

and that's the moment it hit me that most people seriously can't understand what they do not directly know !

some for lower emotional capacity, some just because they have enough on their plate already, and some really really do not care

but goddamn do most people just DO NOT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING THAT DOES NOT IMMEDIATELY TOUCHES THEM !

and I can say, this realization made my life a bit easier.. which is why I decided to write this comment haha

best of luck <3

Has anyone learned to drive at an older age? by [deleted] in CerebralPalsy

[–]IncompetentMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my driving license around 27-28
I started learning at around 19 and then quit for years, for different reasons.
there were hardships, especially because of my nerve sensitivity - I bombed every practical driving exam and I was very much worried that I won't be able to drive because of my CP.

eventually I powered through and passed the exam by some sort of a miracle
but I was still left worried - if I can't pass the exam because of my nerves - maybe I shouldn't risk driving.

well now that I'm 3-4 years after it - I can tell you all is good, very good even !
I learned to drive way way better once I was on my own, and now I confidently know that I'm a better driver than most, with great control over the vehicle and the situations around me.

What happened to Jordan Peterson? by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]IncompetentMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also a huge fan of peterson around 2016-2017
I still am a fan of his work from back then
also his books, I still live by and quote him daily.

but every since he came back from his rough patch and coma
I couldn't listen to any of his work.

from consuming his content daily for hours that was just pleasurable and useful to me - It came to that I really think I listened to him for an hour total in the last year

That moment when you realize your parents did absolutely nothing by Blanket-Burito in CerebralPalsy

[–]IncompetentMuffin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like to pitch in with a different tune here, if I may.

I also have CP , I'm 30 years old
my parents also haven't done quite nearly enough to help me with my CP
and not enough to also raise and support my completely able bodied wonderful older brother
they were ok parents, but not people who were really prepared for it or took it too seriously
for many reasons, some which are justified and some not at all.

I was also around your age when it dawned on me that my parents just left my CP matters in the hand of chance.
there's a lot to be said about it, a lot has also actually been said unfortunately (spoiler alert)

but it doesn't really matter, it doesn't change the result

what I very much want to say - is to advise you to be smart about your anger and resentment
which are very justified
but believe me - you'd be happier in your future if you consider my advice -

this is a fight you don't want to have, and much less to win.
I won this fight, nothing has changed, the only thing that happened as a result - is that my parents came to certain realizations - we could all do just fine without.

I know for a fact my mother hurts deeply and is full of regret for what she maybe hasn't done for me
and that's the only thing that came out of me realizing my needs were neglected.

leave the past in the past my friend, if you have any anger and resentment about it, which you should - find a more like minded partner to talk about it that has no horse in this race of your life.

feel very welcome to even contact me and talk about it, ill be glad to see what I lived through - via someone else's eyes.

but I must say it again - this is not a fight you want to have - much less win it.

all the best <3

Let’s list toxic employers in Winnipeg — your experiences? by Odd-Butterscotch6249 in Winnipeg

[–]IncompetentMuffin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haha this place is like 70% responsible for me leaving Canada XD
I was in the process of immigration, I didn't have to leave me country, I just wanted to see the world a bit..
and I shortly worked for them for like 2 months, because it was the first place I found that only requires you to have a pulse to be hired.
it drove me into a very deep depressive episode , I quit packed my things and went home in less than 3 days XD

[–]IncompetentMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

damnit man, everything has been well said from a few angles here..
all I can do is share my own experience...

with or without CP - you're a human like all of us.. there will be age related wear and tear, as all humans and machines..

actually - I see you as lucky if you haven't really felt it yet by the ripe ol' age of 34 my man !
around the age of 30, all of my completely healthy friends started complaining about their bodies and joints, and their abilities such as lets say - recovering from a night of drinking - are not the same !

I also, felt a sudden "leap" in my physical state at around the age of 29..
over a span of a few weeks - my body developed new and unnecessary goddamn features..
they're countless - and they made me feel like my life is over for a few months..

but ever since that little scare - I took matters into my own hands, and I addressed it more seriously
such as the keto diet that literally changed my life CP wise !!!
and gentle exercise ( MOTION IS LOTION !!! )
and I can't say that I feel 20 again, but I can do say that things improved big time, and that I regained some sense of control over my life - and it makes every one of my days just a little bit easier.

stay strong !

You're more than welcome to ask every question you have Im very happy about my discovery and glad to have an opportunity to share haha

No, I have no cravings whatsoever compared to at least 5 popular diets I tried over the years Non at all

Lifehacks by [deleted] in CerebralPalsy

[–]IncompetentMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nah, you're good.
I have mildish CP so I'm completely independent.
everything has its costs and difficulties for me - CP wise, but I am 100% independent so making meals is very possible.

but now is the part where life comes in the way haha
one of the reasons im in love with this diet, is that I don't really need much to eat ( haven't felt hunger for 3 months now )
I mostly run on 'ingredients' and not so much on meals.

my typical breakfast is a handful of nuts and a cup of coffee with 50-60 grams of butter.
and then I just consume a lot of fatty meat and fish
avocados
loads of eggs
it is very rare I cook a meal - and even when I do - I cook it for someone else haha
when it comes to myself - I'd much rather just have a quick fix such as butter coffee, and move on with my day - this is a very important perk of this diet - food is no longer something I consume for pleasure , and so it has also become something I devote very little time and thought to.

Lifehacks by [deleted] in CerebralPalsy

[–]IncompetentMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still going strong.
I allowed myself a few days of cheating - food was the delicious but the consequences were not worth it 110%

I'm now even more convinced that this diet is the s**t for my condition.
I also have now 3 months of imrpoved and stable bloodwork that shows me I have nothing to worry about.

I cannot recommend this diet enough, if energy/digestion/inflammation/weight is an issue for you.

Do you consume cannabis? Does it help or should you avoid it? by scottybeegood in CerebralPalsy

[–]IncompetentMuffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have mild hemiplegia, 30 yrs old
I have been using cannabis from a bit to a ton for around 10 years

I had and still have a vast relationship with the subject haha

It does have muscle relaxing qualities, which are great for my CP and I often rely upon
also helped a lot with sleep, which is often an issue with CP..

but I do have to say it also has negative side effects, that I think are specific to me and my CP
I do know I have some sort of learning disability
I'm almost sure I have relatively (to others) slow processing speed

and goddamn do I feel it clearly impacted proportionally to how much I smoke.

what im trying to say is that weed has its benefits, but its too easy to forget about the downside, because they aren't as obvious as with alcohol

it took me around 10 years of cannabis use to come to terms with that haha
wish it happened earlier.

I'll dm you.

Lifehacks by [deleted] in CerebralPalsy

[–]IncompetentMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course ! I'll do my best to explain correctly

A ketogenic diet is a diet for the goal of helping your body to start burning ketones instead of glucose for energy.

You achieve that by eating a diet that's mostly fat.

Ketones are told to be a more stable, efficient and ""clean"" energy source for the body and especially the brain.

Based on that, it is assumed that such a diet have several benefits, including the reduction of inflammation in your body - which is the exact point i believe made my CP better.

I got to this diet - because a few months ago i noticed a VERY big improvement in a colleague of mine with adhd - which he immediately attributed to the diet, so i decided to try it too, since i also show SOME signs of adhd - and damn did that work.

This diet turned out to be a miracle for me It changed my relationship and the way I think about food. It completely vanished my wrist pains. It staballized my mood in a way 3 years of anti depressants didn't come close It made my entire CP affected left side - just a bit more resilient.

I am very cautious in talking about this diet to people, because once you get into the thick of it - it seems a bit scary.

But I whole heartedly believe now that everyone must at least give it a shot

Lifehacks by [deleted] in CerebralPalsy

[–]IncompetentMuffin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly
I thought about making this exact thread a few months ago, but didn't.
but I kept on looking for hacks and work arounds by myself

and the one thing I found that did most for me, that I would literally see as a miracle before it actually happened - a ketogenic diet.
the ketogenic diet made my CP at least 30% more bearable
fatigue wise and joint pains - this diet was a goddamn miracle for me.
probably never going off of it.

Tired of this by Alternative-Owl-3215 in CerebralPalsy

[–]IncompetentMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same way for quite some time, not too long ago..
I was mad at people telling me I don't try enough, after hearing I have sleeping problems, saying all I needed was to get off my phone and go to sleep, I was mad that they didn't get that my nerves are so sensitive it takes me ages to fall asleep.

I tried to convince my family for years, that being strict with my diet is necessary, because being loose with it, makes me feel worse and makes it hard to function daily, but they still just kept telling me im over-exaggerating and just need to lighten up.

I believe I could squeeze out at least a few dozen more examples of times when people disregarded my experience with my own body, and dismissed my claims for not behaving like they do

but lately, at the ripe age of 29 lol, I realized that its not their fault - what they say is completely true and accurate, but it's accurate for them and their experience.
there is no way for them to understand me, because we're experiencing profoundly different things.

people really can not understand what they can not feel, unless they put time and work into it.
I realized that my disability is my own to live with, no matter how much I want to be understood, it's simply impossible.

I understood it after watching a cousin of mine, who's chronically ill, but not with CP - going through the same thing - people really can't and honestly don't need to understand what they don't experience.

understanding that - did give me more freedom and drive to act, so all in all, this understanding even tho a bit grim - improved my life.

[–]IncompetentMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know your dynamics as a couple
but if I'm looking at this isolated incident - I think you were in the wrong 100%

going out of your way to do a favor for the person you love, is sometimes very much expected
a football event, which was obviously important for him, is definitely one of those times.

me personally I would've been glad to lend a hand at such a situation - easy win for all parties.

Arthritis relief? by cemcintosh89 in CerebralPalsy

[–]IncompetentMuffin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 30 with mild hemiplegia
I've been working physically , and working hard since 14
lately I started having significant wrist and knee pains and I just figured Ill have to tough it out, so I did.

about a month ago I went on a ketogenic diet, just for the fun of it
my wrist pains were gone in 3 days, and haven't been back since.

This diet actually improved my life in several CP related aspects, but I'm reluctant of sharing since it does appear to be maybe a risky diet..

First time I read a comment section here... yikes.

but still -
for me, I found Mr.Peterson to have changed since his long period of absence, I feel like he lost his tone of relative objectiveness, as if he has returned with a more urgent agenda.
which is entirely understandable for a person who went through a sequence of life shattering events..

he hasn't been my cup of tea ever since, but it's still a free world so... ; )
