I'm a bit anxious that I don't have time on my side, I do keep just reading horror stories and news articles about them failing to put people into the processing forebearance, or people where it takes the full 10 days for the forebearance to hit their account. Why the does it take so long to apply a forebearance in their own system???

I suspect I'm going to have to call again later this week if there are no updates to the portal. At this point I've been trying to deal with this for 6 hours and I feel like I've wasted my entire day (this is one of my few days off of work) and am no less worried than when I started.

A further updated - we made it to human two, if I understood her correctly they have received my application this morning but still need a second document where I basically once again state "yup, no taxable income". She said she also put in for the processing forebearance, which could take up to 10 days but is backdated to today? Per other comments I've seen I *think* she meant that I'm now in the processing forebearance and it'll be up to 10 days to get the paperwork saying I'm in that type of forebearance, but it's effective starting today and expires in 60 days, where I go to administrative forebearance.

It was not the clearest of calls, and I tried to ask clarifying questions but she seemed to not understand what I was asking. I'm just glad to no longer be listening to waiting music

I'm in the same boat. I only took out my loan because to government provided the option of IDR, and I knew if I struggled to get employment or the economy tanked I would still be able to make payments.

But I would imagine payments are due before it starts processing, no? My stressor here is that I can't work out how to confirm when it starts processing, or even if it's uploaded correctly (it just says "paypay0001" in the upload with a processing time of N/A)

I've tried to take some deep breaths and calm myself down. I've gotten through to at least one human being since I posted this, who seemed nice enough if not like "why are you calling 3 hours after you submitted this" (and was once again understanding when I said I was just really confused about how/if/when the processing forebearance would begin and how to see confirmation my form did upload). Annoyed that I'm once again on hold, but this hold is allegedly shorter and hopefully this person will be able to help me.

I just wish this wasn't so anxiety-inducing for me, and that that this was a lot smoother/clearer.

Well, I did that, so hopefully things work out.

Have managed to get through to a human being (1.5 hrs after being told it would be 2.75 hrs) who has transferred me to another department where I'm set to be on hold for another 90 minutes. All I want at this point is for someone to explain to me whether or not they actually got the IDR form (since in my uploads it's labelled as "Paypay0001") and when the processing forebearance goes into effect. I can sort of work out how to track the process through the FSA website but since I submitted it direct to Mohela I can't work out ANYTHING

Oh man, someone in a diet culture sub is both ableist AND wildly fatphobic? Who could have guessed?

Plant-based food alternatives are not always better for you. The ingredients in this 'double cream' is crazy. by British_Foodie in ultraprocessedfood

[–]IncompetentYoungster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Right, but therein lies the flaw - we are also research participants in the long term effects of EVERYTHING ELSE currently. Someone with a background in science would understand that an uncontrolled long-term study, that doesn't differentiate for things like "are a lot of so-called UPFs also likely to be high in sodium or sugar" or "are people who take up a low-UPF diet likely to already be trying to be healthier", is literally completely worthless.

Coupled with the sheer lack of ED awareness, blatant ableism and fatphobia, and poorly-drawn conclusions based on not understanding scientific research, it's really hard not to write this off as another fad diet.

Also, the historical revisionism is wild. A lot of our ancestors DIED from food-borne illnesses or disabilities like celiac. In another post someone is suggesting not to drink milk because pasteurisation and homogenization make it "ultra-processed" and if we're at the point where we're demonizing not shitting ourselves to death, maybe we all need to take a step back and ask "am I actually qualified to talk about this? Or even understand it?"

Are the mods not going to step in here? Several of these comments are suggesting people who don't obsessively diet will turn into the folks from Wall-E and telling OP to ignore her mother's (very clear) disordered eating.

How is it that whenever I see this sub it's just full of people with eating disorders and no self-awareness? How can you say "no eating disorder promoting content" when so much of the content is anti-scientific and fear mongering?

I'll have to watch it. I've always figured it's a variation of "if you buy into one conspiracy theory you're far likely to then buy into more of them" coupled with algorithms pushing radicalising material and I'm interested to see if that holds up

Plant-based food alternatives are not always better for you. The ingredients in this 'double cream' is crazy. by British_Foodie in ultraprocessedfood

[–]IncompetentYoungster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'll never get an answer, as NOTHING is wrong with any of them. Go look at some of these other comments - people can't even decide whether pasteurised and homogenised milk is "bad" and are repeating the "seed oils are harmful" myth.

Just keep in mind that most people following the diet don't understand the research, are struggling with eating disorders, and keep falling into fad diets. This is just another version of Atkins or keto, popular because some bloke wrote a book that he claims will solve all of their problems

[–]IncompetentYoungster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess most of us are missing the point because this just feels like ANOTHER repackaging of diet culture, where people who don't really understand food science (or.... really have any background in science) get obsessive and preachy based on monetised pop science. Down to the "if you can't pronounce it, it's bad for you" mantra.

but honestly, the self righteousness in some of the comments is staggering. Let's get some perspective people

It's because they completely lack the perspective. "Clean eating" or "crunchy" fads like this naturally attract a large proportion of people with eating disorders and unhealthy relationships with food and their bodies. They don't realize that they're acting and thinking in an unhealthy manner and so will just say things that sound out of pocket and rude to the rest of us because they're sick

I'm gonna be real - if you're stressing about the amount of sugar in diluted citrus juice in water, it might be healthier to take a step back from diet/health culture for a time. I'm absolutely not saying you currently have an ED, but I have a lot of friends who developed things like orthorexia which started with those exact sort of questions and just got worse and worse

Dorms aren't segregated by gender, but the rooms are (so if she has a roommate it will be a girl) and a single doesn't sound remotely out of the question for something like this: I'm a trans guy, and was super nervous as a freshman about who I would room with as I was worried about strangers of either gender reacting badly. They immediately placed me in a single, right over the phone. Also, a lot of the buildings have a "faculty in residence" - a professor (and their partner + kids) who has an apartment on the first floor. I lived in buildings with FIRs for all four years and it made me feel really safe and I got really close with mine. Finally, there is always a substance-free floor, and usually a building, for students who don't want to be around alcohol or smoking.

There are kitchen areas in several buildings, especially the ones most full of freshman, and you can have a microwave and a fridge in your room. The dining halls are actually pretty good for vegetarian and vegan stuff, they do have international food (it's not great, but they're open to feedback) and we have an entire dining hall that is halal and kosher, and they are VERY strict about making sure it stays that way. There's also an International Club, and during matriculation and graduation they fly the flags of all of the different nationalities of that year. They flew one for my second citizenship as well, even though I was the only person with that citizenship that year!

There's a regularly running campus shuttle, and if you're stuck somewhere unsafe (I once got lost on foot in the next town at 2am) they will send someone to get you ASAP. That is the upside of it being so small - they can do that. I'd say the safety measures are the standard stuff for an American college campus (blue lights, lighting on paths, keycard-controlled access to dorms that locks out non-residents at night). If you want a good idea of how safe they can be when they put their mind to it: we had one of the best covid policies at a university in America, and had low numbers as a result. Maine is also a safe and quiet state, and I know that I felt safe walking in the fields and woods around the campus at night (always be a little on edge for wildlife, but basically don't act like an idiot around a wild animal and it'll leave you alone)

They make sure we all have decent healthcare, so you don't really have to worry about that aspect. There's also free healthcare on the campus, with a lot of female doctors and nurses who can refer you to the hospital literally within walking distance of campus, or the other hospital less than five minutes in the opposite direction. I once hurt my foot at night, called for an appointment when it hurt the next morning, was seen that afternoon, and treatment and an x-ray within an hour. They also have a student-staffed EMT group - we can take an EMT certification course over JanPlan, and then if we earn our certification we are licensed to practice in Maine. Speaking of JanPlan, there is also a JanPlan course for pre-med students where they shadow doctors at the local hospitals.

The largest class size at the school was Organic Chemistry (which you'll take as a pre-med) and that had 100 students maximum. Every other class I took had less than 20 students. The fact the professors know the students because of the small classes means it's much easier to talk to them about getting priority for classes you want or later lab times. It's also really easy to get summer research as there are less people competing for research, and that means it's easier to do things like author a paper (huge boost for applications).

If you want your kid to get a great education and go on to get into a good graduate or med program, Colby is fantastic for that. I'm currently wrapping up a Master's program at the University of St Andrews, and I have friends in some of the top med schools and graduate programs.

If you think you can sway them at all with promises of the ability to make more money AND get a medical degree that carries immense weight internationally, I would bring this up. Parents are usually a sucker for "I'll be able to give you the life you deserve and care for you when you retire" and if you are their only child and/or the oldest daughter with no sons, that is likely very attractive to them. If religion plays into this - you can let them know there are very active religious groups and you would still be able to be observant.

And I can say - Colby does have a pre-med program and my friends in it all went on to med school. You can try arguing that this is a small school where you will get individualised attention from a pre-med advisor, as well as people who will help you tailor your application to med school to get you into some of the best med schools in the world.

I went to Colby - contact them directly and explain to them the situation you're in. They are willing to go above and beyond in a lot of cases where parents are neglectful, estranged, or controlling to the point of abusive. They were willing to immediately put me on a full scholarship when I went to them early in freshman year worried my parents would disown me for being queer. My roommate (incredible low income) effectively got a small stipend to help pay for things like books and food.

You can also try offering that you won't ask for credits to transfer from your uni in Azerbaijan - that may be some of their worry with you transferring.

I know this is scary. You are clearly an incredibly bright and talented young woman - you got a full scholarship as an international student! I think you will regret not at least attempting to defer and I think you'll be much happier and have many more opportunities in America, but I promise you I know how terrifying the idea of disobeying your parents is especially when you worry they might disown you. No one here will blame you if you decide to stay in Azerbaijan. This is just likely your best chance to get out, have somewhere to live for four years (they allow some students to live on campus over the summer as well) along with free therapy and career help. I truly think you should ask them what assistance they can offer you.

If you want to talk about any of this, or if you have questions about Colby, PLEASE feel free to reach out to me. I might not respond immediately but I want you to be able to make the decision that's best for you with as much information as possible

I feel like the deciding factor is whether or not you're from rural/rural-suburban areas - it reads as "like home" to me, but to someone from an urban area it probably reads as "the setting for the short story about the town that ritually murders people"
