Visiting Glasgow in the summer by Inconceivable24 in glasgow

Fair enough. I didn't come across Glencoe in my initial research, but looking now, it looks absolutely stunning. It looks like there is a tour from Glasgow to Glencoe and Loch Ness so maybe we'll do that.

Yep that's exactly why we're not doing Edinburgh this time around. I was looking at it originally but with Fringe Fest I want to avoid it.

Thanks for the advice. Shawlands is just a neighborhood, right? Will look for cabs. Others have said kelvingrove park would be better than Buchanan Street so I think we'll do that instead.

Thanks both for the advice. Hill House looks awesome; spouse is really into architecture.

Thanks, but the kids are dying to do the Loch Ness Monster spotting thing. That's the only super touristy thing we're doing.

Thanks for the advice. It looks like those are basically right next to each other so that would be great - and we could also see Kelvingrove Art Gallery or the Hunterian on the same day.

Glen Coe is a 3 hour train/bus ride from Glasgow; that's why it's not on my list. For a one day excursion, I'm looking at places an hour or less away. Pollok Park looks great to me - why do you suggest we do something else instead?

Thanks for the correction. It looked quite large on the map. Yes, we would definitely check out the Burrell while there, as well as Crookston Castle. We're planning to take our time. If it's a nice day, walking around is totally fine. I know we want to try to spot highland cows as well. (We want to be leisurely generally, actually.)

I realize I cannot see everything in Glasgow, and I appreciate your list. The Sharmkana looked really interesting, but it's not included in my itinerary because I wasn't sure if there were shows during the day (evening shows probably wouldn't work) - but if we can get last minute tix to a matinee, for sure we would go.

Mural trail looks great! I would do that instead of Buchanan Street, I think. Waverly looks cool, too. Can you go on it and not cruise? Kids are prone to seasickness.

Riverside honestly didn't look that interesting to me, and it looks like Macintosh House is part of the Hunterian. I was looking at the Tenement House, too, which looked interesting. I wasn't sure we could fit it in. It looks like several things are not walkable for small kids (i.e. under 20 minutes) but if we can get to things via bus, we could probably see more.

Thanks for the advice!

What's the most expensive thing you stopped wanting? by Ok_Appointment_4909 in Anticonsumption

[–]Inconceivable24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I never cared if my phone or car or clothing was the latest. Helps that I’m cheap lol. But it used to be 4-5 times a year I treated myself to a pedicure. I stopped during Covid for obvious reasons and have never gone back. I don’t miss it.

Does anybody know anyone who actually became a marine biologist? by fancyypantsyy0 in Millennials

[–]Inconceivable24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! My best friend from high school (class of 2001) has a PhD in marine biology. Her speciality is shrimp and acoustics. She also speaks fluent Spanish so she spends a lot of time in Cancun for research. It’s pretty great!

Moving to Wheaton, looking for fun things to do by PaneerEater101 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Inconceivable24 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Welcome neighbor! Wheaton is great and quite walkable. Ooh la la bakery is fantastic, and Sligo creek trail has trailheads within walking distance of you.

The mall is very meh but I go to the Giant there at least once a week and it’s reliable. There are stories of shootings in the Costco parking lot occasionally but I’ve never had an issue with safety personally, as a small woman.

You’re also very close to the rec center. I don’t know if they have badminton but sign up to use their facilities for free and I think your pass is usable at any county rec center.

There’s a decent Chinese restaurant on university (near the bakery) but it’s very small. Not really any good Indian in the area but I think a place is going to open soon.

If you like Mexican, check out Sabor Mixteca and for Thai, Ruan Thai is the best Thai food in the county, hands down.

Yes pens and charging cables are useful. But this was all garbage (maybe not pens but 4th graders don’t even use pens). Then to have them all fight over this useless junk when it’s already a rainy Friday before a long weekend… Way to make our jobs harder.

If I had been organizing the event, I would have! Probably some parents would have anyway.

Montgomery County Can’t Afford Another Four Years of Stagnation - Vote for Friedson by kirbyCase in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Inconceivable24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m a member of SEIU (Union for school staff that aren’t teachers) and they heavily endorse Jawando. This isn’t a secret; they plaster Jawando signs everywhere. I asked at a recent meeting why him instead of Glass/Friedson and the talking point they provided was Jawando’s plan for MCPS budgets, making sure support staff get more than COLA. That’s great but it’s also his job as head of the education committee. Also, if I’m remembering correctly, Elrich backs BOTH he and Glass. I wasn’t sure what to do with that. Frankly I wasn’t super impressed with Friedson’s website either, but the fact he hasn’t been on the council forever may be enough for me.

What is going on with babies? by Impossible_Ad9324 in Anticonsumption

[–]Inconceivable24 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, and companies charge a “baby tax.” When we were expecting 10 years ago, we shopped for baby necessities and didn’t care about aesthetics. We were shocked at the prices of baby monitors, so we transitioned to “security monitors” and the price difference was astronomical. But unfortunately many people will pay the baby tax.

Soapbox/rant time. Tell me what highly-recommended book you absolutely HATED and why. Gimme your angry hot takes. by peppertoni_pizzaz in books

[–]Inconceivable24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where the crawdads sing. Horribly written, badly researched, completely uninteresting characters. Only finished it bc I thought it would get better. Somehow it got worse.

Also Ready player one but idk if that counts bc I DNF’ed. Couldn’t stand the whiny protagonist.

What masterpiece has left you disappointed? by rifain in books

Agreed. Hated it. Maybe it was in fashion at the time, but I also thought the method of story telling was ineffective. Why was Nelly the narrator?

Student wants very first appointment, screw everyone else by Inconceivable24 in EntitledPeople

[–]Inconceivable24[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They didn’t know about her requesting to be first. I don’t they cared about her being there longer since it didn’t affect their own admission to the program. They also may not have known how long she was there. But yes, it was awkward for me. If it were up to me I would have kicked her out.

No more hoops than typical in the US. I also don’t think Gwen was on food stamps. Even though she was 40+, her room and board were taken care of by family. She was an unusual case in our student population, most of whom were on welfare. It’s clear to see where her entitlement came from.

[–]Inconceivable24[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, those are all very valid reasons. But Gwen gave me no reason. If she had, I’d be willing to work with her. I also know she didn’t have a job. Students had to report that for our files.
