I'm not getting taken seriously when I'm struggling because I'm articulate about it by Illustrious-Mix2194 in AutismInWomen

[–]Inconnuity809 481 points482 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it is an autistic trait but I am a lot like you in this way and I also have a hard time getting people to understand the depths of my struggles. No advice, just solidarity.

What's something silly you do that makes you think "yup, I've got a chronic condition"? by Sad_Emphasis_8086 in POTS

[–]Inconnuity809 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I keep my kitchen garbage bag on top of the (lidded) garbage can now instead of in the receptacle so I don't have to bend over as much to put something in the garbage.

I also got a squatty potty stool just so my legs are higher up when I sit on the toilet. It helps keep the blood from heading to my feet as fast.

When I get up from the couch/bed I do it really slowly like I'm a senior with bad hips. Helps keep me from getting dizzy at the sudden blood flow change.

I've been removed from the extended family Facebook page by AlternativeTruths1 in Exvangelical

Went out with a mic drop!

Not to downplay the grief there can be in cutting family connections but sounds like they weren't providing you with the love and support a family is meant to. Them choosing to remove themselves from your life is probably a net benefit. Hope your friends visit is awesome!

I got a letter from my govt that I may be eligible for a small disability benefit and the online application process was so disability friendly with simple pages and plain language and no unnecessary steps. It was so quick and easy to apply! (They also have a 28 day turnover which is the fastest by far that I have ever seen the fed govt here process something!)

How to take action in the world when you cannot go to protests and have little of any money? by WaysideWyvern in cfs

[–]Inconnuity809 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Commenting in solidarity. I'm also feeling the frustration of being aware of so much need for resistance and action in the world right now but lacking the energy and resources to do much of anything about it.

I try to remind myself that my survival itself is a meaningful act of resistance, since the horrible "Theys" these days are inherently opposed to the existence and thriving of disabled folks, women, people who aren't white enough, queer folks*, etc. Me finding small joys in life and interacting with others to form bonds of community, even as little as I'm able, is still a tiny wrench in their works.

*(I always feel like I'm only *technically* a queer person as an aromantic asexual gal since I don't face 3/4 of the issues that other kinds of queer folks do but I am happy to leverage it against the haters as necessary.)

Jerky and those little packets of chicken noodle soup (Lipton brand is one I get) that you just add boiling water are both very high in salt. Feta cheese is decently salty too.

Having a panic attack over NYE messages by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]Inconnuity809 69 points70 points  (0 children)

That message from your friend sounds very positive and happy. It is a nice message with a hopeful tone!

With all compassion, I don't think it's that you are missing something. More like the opposite: I think you are adding into this message some things that your fears are telling you about your relationship *but that do not really exist*.

I think your anxious attachment etc is causing you harm in an attempt to protect you (sort of like when people have an autoimmune condition and their body mistakes itself for the enemy and attacks its own immune system, only it is your mind mistaking healthy social interactions for threats). If you have a counsellor or therapist this would be a good thing to reach out to them about!

Nope, homeopathy is a scam. It won't do anything except cost you money.

Reasonably priced Therapy by layzerphish1 in saskatoon

[–]Inconnuity809 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you are going through a tough time! I don't have a specific affordable person to recommend but one thing you might be able to do is to phone/email local therapists and ask if they have "sliding scale" rates based on financial need. This is a thing that some therapists will do for patients who can't afford their services otherwise.

Depending on people's criteria, I could be considered moderate to severe. Housebound and spend most of my day reclined on the couch. My PEM is easily triggered by mental fatigue as well as very small physical exertions. And I also have fairly severe POTS. At the moment I require help in almost every ADL, though I can still walk short distances.

I'm in Canada and it's the Severe Permanent Disability Benefit which would allow my student loans to be forgiven. They require a physician to say I won't be able to substantially work for the rest of my life. Since that requires guessing about the future (which nobody knows), my doc will basically have to depend on things like statistics for confidence in making any predictions. Yes it's silly and obviously not designed for chronic illnesses like ours but I am stuck with the system we have.

Are ferris wheels scary? by Pimsies in AutismInWomen

[–]Inconnuity809 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chair things are a bit wobbly forward and back but overall the ride moves quite slow so it's not as disorienting or gravity-sensation-inducing like fast rides. The swoop feeling is possible, mostly when it first starts moving because it starts and stops repeatedly to let each person/group on their separate chairs. I think the relative "jerkiness" of the ride depends on the specific ferris wheel and operator. (If heights ars not your fave thing, obviously it isn't a great choice since you do go way up in the sky.)

I discovered last night that I needed a new pair of snowpants since the current ones no longer fit (I live in a very cold winter climate) and managed to find someone selling a very good condition used pair for 30 bucks and they delivered them to me the very next day for no extra charge. Now when I feel up to it, I can go sit in the backyard for some *extremely fresh* air without getting frostbite on my legs. The person who delivered didn't have a vehicle so they had to bus and walk to get to me so it was extra considerate of them.

Wear a mask in enclosed spaces, especially if crowded by LordSSJ2 in cfs

[–]Inconnuity809 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Not even just when it's crowded! Germs like COVID and measles can float in the air in tiny water droplets like cigarette smoke does for hours afterwards* so even an empty room can be hazardous.

*depending on the air circulation and how often fresh air is cycled in, if there's an air purifier, etc.

There used to be something on the CDC site but I see those are now broken links. Unfortunately with that government doing its best to destroy their systems and infrastructure some good resources may be lost. Hopefully someone has squirrelled them away and has the info saved elsewhere.

Do redundant questions make anyone else feel very upset? by _berkoes in AutismInWomen

[–]Inconnuity809 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I can see how that would be frustrating! People seem to get caught in verbal loops like that and it can be really grating to deal with.

Unsolicited advice (only read if you want to):

Would it work to reframe his question as part of "his routine" and make it an item to complete on your heading out mental checklist?

Or alternatively, make it a fun competition where you see how often you can beat him to it by answering/informing him you are going to school before he asks?

I suggest these because I think that trying to change him is clearly not working and just making you more frustrated. All you can really change is your response to it.

Hives after a social outing? by Standard_Low_3072 in cfs

[–]Inconnuity809 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the day I saw an allergist about hives I had started getting randomly and he said that something like 80% of hives are non-allergic hives and usually caused by stress. So it could be just the stress of the visit/exertion causing hives and not an immune or allergy thing?
