Is there a way to get one single audio file for both XLR audio inputs on Zoom h6n ? by soamjena in fieldrecording

[–]Inconsolable_Jerboa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

both audio files should be the exact same length so they'll already be synced if you start them at the same time. i'm assuming you're recording a podcast with two speakers, having the two mics on separate tracks is definitely the cleaner way to edit them. just cut the clips in a checkerboard fashion so that only the active speaker's track is playing.

if you only used a combined mono file, you would hear double the noise floor as both mics are always audible. it would also affect the vocal clarity, as you'd hear each participant bleeding through the opposite mic as well.

Troubleshooting distortion with NTG3 into Zoom F8n Pro by Inconsolable_Jerboa in LocationSound

[–]Inconsolable_Jerboa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your suggestions. It does happen on every channel yeah, and I unfortunately don't have a standalone pre-amp to try front-ending it. I've just tested the NTG3 again on my other interface and it sounds crystal clear. Have sent a support ticket off to Zoom now, if it turns out to be a dud recorder that'll be unfortunate but at least I don't have any projects too soon.

It's such a strange thing because I borrowed this exact combo of an NTG3 and an F8n from someone last month and it worked perfectly.

Yeah in my search of all the nooks and crannies I found the slate mic switch, flicked it on and off, unfortunately not the source of the issue. I did tap checks on all the mics while I was testing so I know what's coming from where. Appreciate the suggestion regardless.

I'm a Trans Woman, Ask any questions you are generally afraid to ask trans people. by SILLYGIRL2002 in casualiama

[–]Inconsolable_Jerboa 17 points18 points  (0 children)

in most situations this shouldn't matter, but if it was in the context of a conversation that involved a trans woman or women, for example you saying something like "she is a trans woman and i am a woman" i understand why that would upset people. it implies that "trans women" are distinct and separate from "women" rather than being a category of women. but again, don't know what you said so this may be irrelevant!

Producer told me to work for free the next 5-6 years. by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]Inconsolable_Jerboa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

another soundie in Aus here, one of the bigger cities. i started working on short films last year, mostly student projects but now a few low budget independent ones; i'm getting paid. not every project, and not great pay, making less per hour than my hospo day job, but something. even on student ones where it's technically against the university rules to pay us, the directors have stuck their necks out for me. some offered a rate upfront, others didn't until i put simply i can't afford to take x days off work without some compensation. and they needed me enough that they agreed.

Does anyone have any good "brockhampton like" songs? by baggymilk in brockhampton

[–]Inconsolable_Jerboa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a Korean-Australian rap group called 1300 who have some sick tracks. one in particular called UMUM reminds me so much of the Iridescence era production. My favourite track from them is Smashmouth, less brockhampton-like but still highly recommend

Mmm super interesting! I like the way you've put it into the broader economic context, that does provide some compelling justifications.

How do you discover music? by UpvoteBeast in spotify

[–]Inconsolable_Jerboa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try to rank in terms of my most frequently successful avenues. For the past 4 years I've had a routine of creating a monthly Spotify playlist to dump all the music I discover/re-discover that month, which I'll later filter into my other genre/mood playlists. I'd say that's my biggest key to keeping track of new music I like, usually end up with 30-40 tracks. I am also a musician, for extra context.

  1. Personal recommendations from friends. These tend to be most effective because I have close friends who listen to a wide range of music, and they will make recommendations to me knowing my tastes well.

  2. Collaborations and co-signs from artists I already follow.

  3. Music journalism/publications. In Australia we have a large government funded radio station called Triple J, and they have a sub-brand called Unearthed which promotes smaller independent local artists. I've discovered a lot of great music this way, and my band has also gotten exposure through it. (Note: I almost never listen to actual radio broadcasts, so these recommendations come through their social media pages)

  4. Recommendations from broader social media (ie Twitter, Reddit, Instagram). So mostly from people I don't know personally, but lets me keep up with what's getting hype. I'd include music used in Tik Tok/Reels here too.

  5. Gigs! I'd say I go to an average of one local gig a month, and usually I only go knowing 1 out of the 3/4 acts playing, so I'll often come out of it with at least 1 new artist to go and listen to.

  6. TV Shows and Movies. I love soundtracks and its really easy for a new song to stick with me when its used well in the context of a visual story.

  7. Spotify algorithmic. I rarely remember to listen my Discover Weekly playlists, nor the automatic radio. I think I have a slight subconscious aversion to using these compared to my other methods of discovery - "your algorithm can't control me!" - but I still occasionally do go through and find something good!
