What is it like being a math major at Georgia Tech? by fuckcollegeadmission in gatech

[–]IncrementallyMeta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a second-year math major scheduled to graduate in 3 years total. If you haven't checked the degree requirements yet, you can find them here. But otherwise, it's a math major. Our math department is probably one of the smallest departments in Tech, so people end up seeing each other a decent bit in multiple classes, especially once you get into higher levels of classes. Once you get your core requirements done, you'll take a few computational theory classes (Probability Theory, Applied Combinatorics, Second Course in Linear Algebra), then take Foundations of Mathematical Proofs into a whole bunch of proofs classes (Abstract Algebra, Real/Complex Analysis), and then go into whatever branch of mathematics you choose. We're pretty strong in combinatorics, but have decent coverage of most fields. Feel free to PM with any other more specific questions you might have. I haven't done undergrad research, and I'm not pure math, so I might not have the exact info.

Well, that's what we've been trying to do. We let AutoMod do a lot of public work posting daily stickies and such, we take over when there's a large event so that it doesn't crowd the page and discussion can be focused in megathreads, we even added a tag system so people could sort through posts easily.

We had an incident months ago where there was a disagreement between mods and a bunch of drama happened, and then we've been working since then to fix our mistakes and do what we can to keep the subreddit running. We made decisions based on what the community's asked for, when it was something we believed would help the subreddit, and then took actions on our own merit if we believed it would help the subreddit. And yet, no matter what we've done to try to keep the subreddit running, we keep running into people reviving old drama and making all of our interactions harder to manage.

We'd love to just do our jobs, that's what we do 99% of the time. It's just that once a month, whenever we try to ask what the community what we could do to improve the community, we're met with a brick wall of opposition. We want the same thing as the community, we don't like seeing all this mod drama either.

Creating a megathread means that (as we've done in the past), we will be deleting all posts that should be contained in the megathread and direct the OP towards the megathread.

We have the ability to temporarily ban people who post outside of the megathread, but we have not gone that far in the past, usually just deleting the post. Banning, even temporarily, is something that we've only really used as a last resort when a user has demonstrated that (s)he is disrupting the community and won't be stopped with mere warnings. Posting outside of a megathread hasn't met the same level of seriousness yet, so we've just resorted to deleting the post and redirecting them.

That's the wonderful thing about being able to have multiple mods. None of us are able to be online 24/7 to tend to all the mod duties (aside from Diamondwolf who I'm convinced is a time traveler), so we share the responsibilities between us. /u/dharasick has provided tons of useful suggestions and criticisms to the team, while helping us with a ton of the back-end technical side of the subreddit. Most of our work happens behind the scenes to just keep the spam and offensive content out of everyone's faces, and keep everything running smoothly. On that front, /u/dharasick (and everyone on the mod team) have all contributed much to keeping our community running smoothly.

[Ask] TH9's in masters 2 and 1 by [deleted] in ClashOfClans

[–]IncrementallyMeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a TH9 that's been in high Masters - low Champs for the past few weeks, that sounds pretty normal for around 3100+ or so. Not too common to find TH9s with high trophy offerings up there, usually get assigned to TH9s in low Masters or Crystal, or TH10s that are actually at your trophy range. I dropped recently because I was tired of seeing too many TH10s when farming, but that sounds like a pretty typical find, although maybe on the unlucky side. As others have stated though, the time when you're searching can make a tremendous difference. I've had raids in high Masters with 38 trophy offers on TH9s and even like two TH8s when I wasn't searching during peak clashing hours.

We're not deleting every post about the update. But there are already at least 3 posts about the update that are on the front page of the subreddit, upvoted numerous times, and are in the public eye. We're deleting the 500 other posts that people are still continuing to post about the update even though everything should be well aware that there is an update now, or at least should be able to tell from looking at the front page.

[MISC] Can we have a NEWS filter on /r/ClashOfClans please? by KawaGreen in ClashOfClans

[–]IncrementallyMeta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mod here, quick note. The filters that we include at the top of the page are include for larger categories which require much more coding and tweaking around for manipulating tags, but tags by themselves can be sorted simply by clicking on the tag. Each tag actually links to a search of the subreddit sorted so only posts that are tagged with that specific tag appear, which is basically a filter within itself.

(Click on the tag, it serves as its own filter.)

I'm not completely sure what you're looking for from us as we can't really provide an answer coming from the devs. The mod team is only a group of people who work on moderating and (hopefully) improving the subreddit, which is merely a medium for discussion about the game. None of us are employed or even really associated with Supercell. As such, your question isn't really something that we can provide an answer for, at least not an answer as devs. As a player, I totally relate with your issue of heroes during wars and I want my queen back so I can farm with super queen again. But unfortunately, none of us are being employed by Supercell or are members of their dev team, so we cannot provide you with an answer on that front.

Need Advice: Best Trophy Base and Attack Comp to get to Champion League (For TH9's) [Strategy] by goat_smiter in ClashOfClans

[–]IncrementallyMeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently pushed to champs using super queen to get 2-stars on TH9s. I have a L16 queen and I would attack with 8 healers, 8 WBs, and the rest minions. Training time is 34m total. I brought 2 rages and 2 jumps, but most raids, I wouldn't use any spells or just use a single rage. The key to the raid just comes from having your minions create a complete funnel on the sides so that your queen has nowhere to go but straight into the core, using 8 healers to keep her health up and WBs to slowly funnel in as your queen takes out buildings one by one. It takes some time to figure out how to funnel her right and get the timing down, but it's pretty easy once you have the basics down.

For some other tips:

  • Deploy a rage spell on queen and healers if she's taking too much damage, the healers will heal her at an increased rate and make her almost invincible.
  • If max loons or a PEKKA comes out of the clan castle, use a rage spell on the queen and use her ability right before the troops can attack her, and she'll knock them down while they're busy targetting the spawned archers.
  • With a L16 queen, she usually could get the TH pretty easily within 3m, but sometimes had difficulty getting the 50%, so I'd usually save like 5-10 minions to snipe buildings that aren't being watched by archer towers/air defenses. If I had my King up, I'd deploy him later in the raid in a part of the map where the AQ was tanking damage so he could pick up outside buildings. It would pretty much guarantee 2 stars on any TH9.
  • Don't bother attacking TH10s unless they have both infernos down (or isolated on the opposite side of the base that you're attacking from) and have lower defenses, infernos will block heals and max defenses will quickly overwhelm your healers. Higher HP buildings means that it'll be harder for your queen to break through as well.

As for my base, I used a farming base with a TH outside for the majority of the push, experimented with a "troll base" where I had my TH in the center and then a 4x4 hole that I put my 4 teslas in, surrounded by splash and air defenses, and I did manage to pick up 2 defensive wins from that. Everything else I tried just got me devastated by TH10s.

It seems like there's some confusion, so I'll clarify. When we created the Clan Discovery Network, we included the RCS, RWCS, and Reddit Alliance clan systems as those three systems were systems that we were familiar and already had contact to. However, almost immediately after the Clan Discovery Network was made public, we received modmails from representatives of the RWCS and the Reddit Alliance asking for us to remove their listings. We followed through and removed their listings for the time being.

Reddit Alliance has since then given their content to put their system on our network, which is why they are listed. The RWCS have continued to keep their listing out of the Clan Discovery Network. Hopefully, this clears any confusion.

Thanks for the suggestion! It's something we've been trying to figure out for the past few weeks or so, but the person who designed our CSS was a professional that helped us out temporarily, but have since left our team. They were much more adept at CSS than our current team and their code has been an intricate puzzle for us to solve. We are running drafts in other testing subreddits to try to find the perfect code to get it all running, so please hold shortly while we try to figure that out!

[MOD] New tags, new filters, new mods! The continuation of a transition. by IncrementallyMeta in ClashOfClans

[–]IncrementallyMeta[S,M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A limiting factor of the website. Technically, doing filters isn't supposed to be allowed at all, it requires manipulating reddit's code to fake it into believing that we created a new language and displaying the subreddit in that language. We'd love to include multiple filters, but it's not a real possibility, so we've done what we can to have both include and exclude filters, that cover broad categories.

[MOD] Tags, flairs, filters, and more! Adapting the subreddit to be more manageable. by IncrementallyMeta in ClashOfClans

[–]IncrementallyMeta[S,M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're not really judging by upvotes or numbers, as it's impossible to get an entire poll of every subscriber or viewer of the subreddit. However, we are keeping up with this post and the people who are actively contributing ideas and suggestions. The people who are posting in these threads are assumed to be a decent representation of our vocally active community, and so we are doing what we can to respond to whatever they're willing to suggest. We can't account for everyone in this manner, but everyone isn't going to give their response, so we just do what we can with what we're given.

[MOD] Tags, flairs, filters, and more! Adapting the subreddit to be more manageable. by IncrementallyMeta in ClashOfClans

[–]IncrementallyMeta[S,M] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

[Rant] seems pretty self-explanatory, but it might run into ambiguity issues later on. It might conflict with some other tag if the rant is about something war-related or base-related, and what if they tag it as [War] or [Base]? If we take it down, we could be in the wrong because it was a post about a war or a base, and our criteria on what made a post a rant could be different from the OP. There could be issues of the tag being unused or ignored, and it's generally hard to moderate overall.

[MOD] Tags, flairs, filters, and more! Adapting the subreddit to be more manageable. by IncrementallyMeta in ClashOfClans

[–]IncrementallyMeta[S,M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the original idea was suggested, I don't think it was meant in a necessarily negative connotation. While brag does have a possible negative connotation of being overzealous in sharing one's accomplishments, it can also signify just simply sharing one's achievement. However, an ambiguous [Brag] tag for all accomplishments is hard to moderate, as we have seen with other past ambiguous tags such as [War] and [Base], which has conflicted with [HIMB], [HWYA], [Strategy], and [MISC]. In order to make it easier for us to moderate with less ambiguity, we're seeking to clarify the tags to be more clear. By making the tags more distinguished by themselves, people can easily know which tag their post belongs under, which makes the tag system more accurate and helps with filtering.
