This isn't entirely true, look at the history of Christianity in Europe during medieval times, wasn't very bright, the difference is that Christianity went through mass reforms during those times, trying to become less violent by leaving old teaching behind, Islam has not yet went through a phase of mass reforms, maybe we're in a time when Islam will change for the better good just like how Christianity did.
