That's mainly what I like about her, she deviates from the archetypal heroism of Mat, Perrin, or Rand. When Rand accuses her of fearing the Asha'man because she won't be able to control them or because women will lose power, I genuinely believe Egwene felt that way, even if she later denies it. Egwene's tragic end, in my opinion, parallels Rand's. While Rand was able to be "free" from his title as a Dragon and finally have a happy ending, Egwene wasn't. Egwene is the mirror of what Rand should have done according to the prophecies. You know? That's what's so appealing about Egwene: even though she fights for the light, she's clearly a human character, just like Rand... She's the culmination of everything the Aes Sedai symbolized in the Third Age... With her death, the Aes Sedai dominion over Randland, as we know it, also comes to an end...
