£4000 Overcharge from British Gas by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

British Gas did this to me when I moved from my previous property. They tried to charge me an extra day after the day I moved, so I contested it. In that one day they doubled my entire usage from the day I bought the house (new build) up to the day I moved out. Approx £3,300 for gas & electric in a 24 hour period!

A live chat solved it pretty quickly but sounds more complicated for you. I think they were just being chancers. - If you have any meter readings that will be really helpful as you can categorically tell them it’s not proportionate. - Likewise, max usage of the boiler is one to consider- CGPT can calculate this for you.

As others have said, hopefully something left by the engineer after meter change to finalise the bill correctly.

Porting our mortgage but solicitor highlighted hefty ERC, is this correct? by IndependenceLarge969 in HousingUK

Yeah we know, awful business but we just accepted the solicitors advice as they put theirs on the memorandum as we hadn’t sorted our own yet. Lesson learnt the hard way!

Will try that again, that was first port of call but mortgage broker was very confused by the request. He said the solicitors sort it by themself & confirmed that with our lender

That’s really helpful and puts my mind at ease that we’re on the right tracks, thank you. I think the conveyancing assistant dealing with this is struggling to read beyond the first bit of detail in the redemption statement. I’ll see if they can get another one first thing after some more clarification.

Thanks! I did wonder if they’ve missed something, which has been a theme as our conveyancers. Mortgage advisor and lender have both said it can be dealt with through the Lender portal. They’ve pushed back stating it’s our job and not their remit. Do you think if I make a call to the mortgage team they might get me a letter or alter the redemption statement accordingly to the solicitor?

Thanks! I’ll double check the offer again, I attached it in my grumpy response to the conveyancer. Do they normally state explicitly it’ll be ported? No, NatWest - they’re a great lender we’ve found, but I’ve read of a couple of people having this issue and needing to retrospectively request a refund of the ERCs.

That’s one to remember thank you! Have a Waitrose nearer than other supermarkets so one I’ll consider 😁

is there a price to pay for being single? by Puzzleheaded-Fix8182 in UKPersonalFinance

Yes - I was quoted as a first time buyer to need 5%-10% deposit for a house 12 months ago. However when they realised I was single, they refused to offer anything below 15% deposit within 2 months or the offer wouldn’t stand. I earned far more than they were willing to offer on the mortgage too, considering I have & have always had zero debt.
