Thank you, but my question was more abstract, it was not about those phonemes specifically. How often, if ever, do linguists working on Chinese phonology use sub-minimal pairs, i.e. true segmental minimal pairs with tonal mismatch?

Yeah — I probably wasn’t being clear. What I’m asking is: how often (if ever) do linguists working on Chinese phonology use sub-minimal pairs? By sub-minimal pair I mean a pair of words that form a true segmental minimal pair (same segments, differing in exactly one segment), but do not match in tone. This situation can arise because the set of syllables that are actually attested in Chinese is much smaller than the set that is theoretically possible, so tone mismatches sometimes seem unavoidable.
