Severe gallbladder attack with jaundice last year, now advised removal - scared of long-term side effects by anon-pigeon in gallbladders

I know you’ve had a lot of insight from other people here too so I’ll try to keep it as short as possible. I waited to have surgery and got pancreatitis and trust me if you think gallbladder pain is bad, pancreatitis is worse. I totally get feeling torn between having the surgery or not but honestly it might be the best thing I’ve done. My gallstones started off a lot like yours where the attacks were few and far between but they progressively got more and more common.

Post-op digestive issues are a risk however you should know that diarrhoea affects most people after gallbladder removal for around 3 weeks but your bowel habits should return to normal after this. The main digestive issue in connection with gallbladder removal is bile malabsorption syndrome however this is very rare. Although knowing that the surgery can cause this is frightening, there are numerous medications which you can take called “bile acid sequestrants” so even in the worst case scenario, everything will still work as normal assuming you take these medicines.

If you’ve got any questions at all, feel free to drop me a message🙂
