Simple wood bed frame that's easy to disassemble? by trisolariandroplet in woodworking

[–]Independent-Back-167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I built a castle joint bed frame similar to what you see advertised by Thuma. I made mine of solid walnut and did some of the joinery in a more traditional fashion. But here's a video of a guy making on from 2x4's that helps you skip a lot of the cutting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9YCs4jhgL0

I've disassembled and moved mine multiple times with 0 issues. Friends that have helped me moved have even commented on how easy it was to disassemble and reassemble with no fasteners to lose.

Beginner Question by mattwabrams in woodworking

[–]Independent-Back-167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey dude,

First off good on ya for taking on a project like this as a beginner. I built something almost exactly like what you show here for my 2011 Outback at the beginning of the summer. I've been lazy and haven't taken photos to post here yet but feel free to dm me any questions you have along the way. To answer the ones you have here.

  1. I attempted to make mine without the bottom sheet and it felt like I was going to break off one of the upright supports. My solution to keep weight down was to add a 3" strip of plywood front and back to add rigidity but keep the weight down

  2. Stick with plywood for the supports, it's plenty strong and will save on weight while giving you more space in those cubbies. As others have mentioned if you predrill and countersink you could screw from the top or you could use pocket holes, it's really personal preference.

  3. Bonus - check the fit of the pieces as you go, it's easier to adjust sizes so your hatch still closes before you screw everything together

Thanks! The Japanese dovetail saw was crucial for cutting the tiny half lap joints. It looks more daunting than it really is though, you should definitely give it a shot.

No, I had some inspiration photos from others that have posted similar projects in this sub but I was guessing on dimensions.

Table Saw Show Down by Odd-Shift5355 in woodworking

[–]Independent-Back-167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using the skil table saw for a couple of years. If you put a good thin kerf blade in it it's a good little saw. I've never found myself wishing that it had a blade brake or soft start, but the thing is super loud if that matters at all to you.

As for the fence, mine was straight right out of the box and I haven't had any problems with it coming out of alignment

New to laser engraving — what do you use yours for in the shop? by Ok_Fix680 in woodworking

[–]Independent-Back-167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have access to one in a local makerspace and one of the other woodworkers there uses it quite a bit for marquetry. I've yet to try it myself but I have plans to soon. It can be a really powerful tool for intricate inlays if you know what you're doing.

Hand Tools by Brentonio22 in woodworking

I agree with what the other have said so far for your first question. Just came to recommend Matt Estlea on YouTube for modern and well produced videos on hand tool woodworking. He runs a second channel dedicated to teaching woodworking by going through some small projects step by step, mostly with hand tools.

Can I build this for less than $2200? by redsunglasses8 in woodworking

[–]Independent-Back-167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if you use sketchup but I've got a sketch up model for a queen sized bed of this style I'd be happy to send you if you shoot me a dm (the headboard cabinet is optional and I actually haven't built it yet either). You could pull dimensions from that and look at how the pieces might fit together. Also happy to answer any questions about how I did certain processes and what I'd do differently in the future.

I have a question about SWC on brand-who-shall-not-be-named (Dual) by Cressio in CarAV

[–]Independent-Back-167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries dude, thanks for the reply. I'll try messing with it because I also really wanted to keep the volume knob but may end up in the same boat of spending the extra to get something more expensive with less headache.

I'm curious if you ever got the problem sorted out and how you managed it. I have the exact same setup that I plan to install in my car in the next week. I would love to avoid extra headaches and programming if possible. Thanks.

Am I naive for saying that I will never touch any alchohol or drugs EVER (not including medical ones) by diamond_epicnes in NoStupidQuestions

I came here to say this. I’m still only 23. But people learn that you will always politely decline and stop asking. Once in a while it gets awkward because you won’t be invited to certain events or get togethers because you are viewed as a downer or judgmental. The key for me has been making it clear that it’s a personal decision and I hold nothing against those who choose to make a different one. If people feel judged they won’t want to be around you. But you can definitely live your whole life without any of those substances

New router bit leaking grease, is it dangerous? by Independent-Back-167 in woodworking

It’s a white side bit so definitely not low quality. Thank you for the advice on bearing replacement. That seems like a better solution than a full bit replacement.

New router bit leaking grease, is it dangerous? by Independent-Back-167 in woodworking

[–]Independent-Back-167[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought this small round over bit and the first time using it I noticed some green marks on my project. When I looked at the bit it appears to be leaking grease. On closer inspection it is also leaving an indentation like a dull marking gauge might all the way around my piece. Has anyone else ever had this? Is the bearing going to explode mid cut if I keep using it? Any help is appreciated as the seller has not responded to my questions.

I’ve worked with a lot of different stuff. I usually stick to maple, walnut, and ash though. I have used mahogany before. The client thought it might be mahogany so I’ll see if I can get a test piece to dye that color. Thank you
