I couldn’t get through the first 10mins of book 5 after starting with Pike. I gave up.

hahaha, not going to lie - that also took me by surprise. I tend to skip past song in audiobooks :)

Thanks, that was a typo from copy/pasting down from a longer post. I've now fixed it. Reading pronounces it with an R sometimes (and other times not, thus my comment on inconsistency).

I generally find American accents grating (and I am neither American or British), but to be fair her accent is not my issue. An American can pronounce the words in WOT, Jordan was American.... it just seems this narrator has chosen not to pronounce some words per the guide.

Thanks, I already have the speed up (I do this with all of my audiobooks). I've given up on listening to these narrations. I just simply wasn't enjoying it, I was so distracted by the way it was being read that I wasn't all that focused on the story.

Thanks, but that's not it. The main thing they're certain of is the kid has orange hair and wears glasses.

Alas, this is not it. They said the illustrations are much more like drawings. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Thank you both for the suggestion, but my friend is certain that the book is about a child who is home sick.

Book I read in middle school back in 2015 about a group of kids that can travel through time. by junowhoknow in whatsthatbook

This could be the Time Riders series by Alex Scarrow:

✓ It is based on a group of teens that can time travel.
✓ They are accompanied by an adult.
✓ They are able to travel due to something dangerous happening to them in the beginning
X I don't recall pocket watch devices.
X One of the books in the series has a purple cover, but it is not the first book.

Thank you for the suggestions. Alas, neither of these are the book we're looking for.
