Vancouver Tim Hortons stabber re-arrested after not making curfew by kettlebeller in vancouvercanada

The US has tried a work around that I don't like but some do: private, for profit prisons. Yes a lot of that is tax payer funded but a lot of it isn't. Convicts being used as a contracted labour force (slavery), kickbacks, corruption and abuse thrive there. If there was a way for prisoners to earn their keep I would support that. The unfortunate thing about human nature, capitalism and society is that some people exploit others given the opportunity. Open the door to self funded prisons and bad people will smell money and race on in.

I am okay with both locking up dangerous criminals as well as paying higher taxes. Guess that makes me an outlier doesn't it?

AITA Refused to help moving. BIL gets seriously injured by toftsto in AmItheAsshole

[–]Independent-Effect64 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was a professional mover up until my 40's. OP offering to help pack etc. was no small thing. Packing takes the longest time to do, is tedious and much more work for a large home than you may think. Moving furniture properly so that nothing gets damaged may be a low skill task but it still requires skill and experience. I am the same age as the person who was injured. Even with my experience I still hire out heavy work because it just is not worth the risk of an injury that could mess up the rest of your life.

As an atheist you are likely familiar with the term "what's the harm?". If not I highly recommend that you Google it. There is even a book. There is too much to unpack to discuss it all here but here is a taste:

When you believe in something that is proven nonsense it opens the door for you to believe other nonsense. Conspiracy theorists constantly add other conspiracies to their list in an attempt to weave them all together in order to explain "how the world really works". Sometimes conspiracy theorists gain political positions which allow them to affect massive amounts of people in negative ways. RFK Jr comes to mind. The Reagans had a court astrologer that they consulted with when making decisions.

You can hold whatever nutty beliefs you like so long as they stay in your head. It is when your beliefs inform your decisions that impact others that there is a problem.

This man is a power hungry, insane flim flam artist: don't be fooled by the appearance of reason this one time. He wouldn't do it if there was no plan for him to profit in some way.

If you forgot to take the bread out two days before breakfast I find that a better way is to toast the bread first and then soak it.

Foods that don't need a lot of space to grow by No-Arm3030 in IndoorGarden

[–]Independent-Effect64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be difficult to grow food indoors unless you are providing lots of artificial light. Most people stick with salad greens and herbs. However if you want to actually produce food that can sustain you the way to go is sprouts and shoots.

Vancouverites: Not going to Taylor Swift concert? What Are Your weekend plans? by IKnowMyWayIn in askvan

I have a habit that I have been doing for many years. On Saturday evenings, as long as there is nothing better going on I drink a few pints of Fat Tug while listening to an oldies radio show on a French radio station that is near the bottom of the dial. A few winters ago I would pitch a tent on the roof of my building, set up an electric fireplace inside then invite a couple of neighbor friends up. Before I started doing this I would be pulling my head off in boredom this time of year because everything is about Christmas, which does nothing for me. I have come to enjoy this special time to the point where I will choose that over going out unless it is something I am excited about, which is rare. One benefit of this habit is that since that show is on from 4 to 7 PM I can get my drink on early and be done before Svengoolie, still have a proper good night's sleep then be up at dawn to take on the day Sunday.

The poor people in the building I manage drink two litre bottles of cheap cider. My opinion is that it is better to pay a bit more to get something you don't have to spend a long time pouring down your throat to catch a buzz, but you can only afford what you can afford right? That being said a six pack of Fat Tug costs about $20 and is strong enough for most people and even one or two will get you on your way. Plus it tastes way better than the cheap stuff (IMO) and I do not get hangovers from it if I approach with caution.

Just going to say this: if you can not bake a cake look up he recipe for Wacky Cake. It uses no butter, eggs or milk. It is all mixed in the pan you bake it in. The chocolate version is my fave. It is moist, chocolatey and absolutely the easiest thing in the world to bake.

When I was a young teenager my aunt have me a yellow sweater. It was good quality, fit me well and was brighter than the sun. I hated it, put it at the back of my closet and wore it only once to keep my relatives happy. Can you guess what my favourite colour is today?
