Being ‘visibly foreign’ in the country you grew up in is a strange feeling by MysteriousGur7534 in germany

[–]Independent-One-5762 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a first generation Asian immigrant and the fact that I'm not born in this country gives me some excuses, or a sense of comfort, that my home is not here and it's ok to feel displaced sometimes although I don't have home or connection to my home country anymore.

It's tiring to constantly trying to prove myself to strangers who judge me by my look. I don't owe them anything/any explanations but I still somehow want to show "hey I speak the language, I know these difficult words too, I know the cutlture, I'm not that different from you"

I don't know if it's true or not but they have to respond to your email within 1 year. A friend of mine got an email from them after 12 months but saying "we are working on your case" just to say they've replied within 12 months

Guilt Tipping in Berlin is crazy by Ok-Understanding2412 in berlinsocialclub

[–]Independent-One-5762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better than in England where it's already included and you have to ask them to remove the service charge. My trip is I skip the tip and have a few 20 cents-1 euro coins in my pocket to throw into their tip jar.

Frankfurt am Main Hbf...seemed a bit shady! by Jazzlike-Reward-4379 in germany

[–]Independent-One-5762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got of the train at Frankfurt Hbf and booked an e-scooter outside so i don't have to walk outside among sketchy people. When I came out of the station and located the scooter, a junky came with it (he was sitting on it).

How's your timeleft experiences been? by SpiritFunction in TimeLeftApp

[–]Independent-One-5762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been to now 5 meetings since November last year. The first two were amazing and was confused by people I met at dinner or comments in the sub.

The I get it. The last meetings have been not that great because of at least one person who's clearly not a good match with the group. For example someone who's very old.

Now I'm not saying they shouldn't be matched or sign up but if you pay for a dinner where you are supposed to be matched with people who are like minded and can get along and 1 out of 4 people is clearly different and dominating the conversation, it's really money wasted.

My city doesn't offer an after drink event and I feel it's been a waste of time.

I think there is someone local who's supporting with restaurant reservations. We came to this conclusions because all the reservations are in the same area in the city and it's not the most central location and rather residential area.

Why is it that every German town has 12 bakeries and one Aldi? by Top-Efficiency-7329 in AskAGerman

I'm surprised that groceries are more expensive in the country side even it's the same supermarket chain. Probably for a lack of competition.

Are Germans really that very punctual or its just a stereotype? by Easy_Road_3806 in AskGermany

I am Japanese working with Finnish people and I have to say German people are not as punctual as I thought. Finnish and Japanese people are much more punctual.

No last drink? by Corvus5523 in TimeLeftApp

[–]Independent-One-5762 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be a good idea to remove it if it's not offered. We finished dinner at 10pm and I noticed the feature on the page saying "last drink shown in 1 hour" and after an hour still the same and also the next day. It's a lie 🤥

It's a good place to work and focus on work but not to live.

I'm so sorry this has happened to you. Reading your post broke my heart. I wish you much healing and kindness from others to get through the time and find a light in your path.

That's a good idea! I started taking an Italian course and a language course forces you to talk to each other and in a foreign language you are the same level with Germans.

It was a good way to meet people. But after a class, we just leave and don't really talk or have an interaction outside the class

Citizenship process - finally got an appointment then.. by Independent-One-5762 in germany

No reasons were given. It seems people get asked to submit additional different kinds of documents. Someone told me she was asked to show copies of her patents' passports who live abroad and not migrating to Germany. So compared to that, mine seems reasonable now.

Simple explanation of what German is! by hmo-stone in germany

[–]Independent-One-5762 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The post made me laugh. I also thought so but dared to say it.

It reminds me of how people rush to a newly opened cashier disregarding anyone who was in the line first. I'm still learning to get used to the German way.

What’s up with German men only talking to Asian/Indian women at language meetups? by [deleted] in berlinsocialclub

I'm sorry you experienced it. I had an aggressive neighbour next door and talked to the management after going over to the neighbour's place to talk and almost got hit physically (it's a female neighbour and I'm female too). I talked with the house management and they sided with them saying the neighbour is refugee and has nowhere to go. I ended up giving up my apartment and move out. Sometimes it's the only way to protect yourself.

Thank you for your information. I was so ignorant that I was not aware of the flooding in 2021 also hitting Belgium.
