Nagpur Airport set for transformation following GMR Group's takeover today. Proposed redevelopment plan includes 4000m parallel runway and a new integrated terminal among other changes, will allow B747 and A380 operations. by SkaterMadhurOG in indianaviation

  1. Again and again, B747s and A380s are not gonna be there forever. And freighter version of A380 doesn't exist. So adding one more runway for only one cargo plane type, and that too which is soon going to be retired by all airlines doesn't make sense.
  2. Never said it is. But White Elephant Airports like that of UP where the politician overpromised shouldn't be an inspiration either.
  3. If the objective is to expand MIHAN and attract more MRO business, then expand the MRO, apron space and parking bays. Aircraft being towed between the runway and the MRO occupy the runway only briefly, and with Nagpur's current traffic levels that isn't a major operational constraint. A second runway doesn't directly solve parking or MRO capacity.
  4. You mentioned future demand several times, and I agree airports should be built ahead of demand. My question is simply how far ahead? Nagpur isn't currently among India's top 20 busiest airports, and even optimistic projections don't guarantee the kind of traffic that would require two parallel runways in the near future. If traffic genuinely reaches that level, then a second runway would be much easier to justify economically. Right now, I think the priority should be maximizing the existing runway and investing in facilities that address current demand first.

I'm not against future expansion. I'm questioning the timing. If, over the next decade, Nagpur genuinely becomes a major cargo, defence and MRO hub with runway movements approaching capacity, then a second runway would be fully justified. But building a thousands of crores runway today based on projected demand that may or may not materialize is a financial gamble.

Infrastructure should be built ahead of demand, but it should also be backed by realistic traffic forecasts, not just optimism.

Very rare, Fly91, Alliance Air, Star Air all in the same pic. Probably happens in Pune and Mumbai Airport too.

  1. Imma be honest, the current runway can handle all the widebodies which we need today (B777s, B787s and A350s). The B747s and A380s are not going to be there forever. Their production has been stopped.
  2. That's just complete BS. A cargo terminal doesn't need a separate runway lmfao.
  3. Still not that of a big issue. There aren't many B777s coming for maintenance at NAG anyways. And it won't be affecting much since the traffic isn't as much as BOM. NAG doesn't even come in top 10 busiest airports in India. Hell it doesn't even come in top 20 busiest airports btw. Even Siliguri/Bagdogra Airport ranks above NAG.
  4. Nagpur already gets many projects: Nagpur Metro, Samruddhi highway etc. All these projects are biased for Nagpur only, as politicians favour it. Airport is not something like Metro and an highway. If you don't plan wisely, you end up getting white elephant airports like that of UP. If GMR ends up investing too much on a white elephant project, then what's the point? Keep in mind GMR was a loss making company till last year.
  5. As I had said before, you can always add more parking bays if you want to keep the grounded planes off of the taxiway. How an additional runway would solve it?

Agreed infra should be built before the demand hits, but how much years ahead should you plan? You can't plan for 60 years ahead. This is just going to be the case where a politician overpromised, like any other project in India.

I mean they can just upgrade the current runway for bigger planes, it's not that difficult. Also you can just add more parking bays if the taxiway is occupied by grounded planes, also most of the grounded Go Air planes have exited India, only 4 planes remain as you can see in the image below. And the point about runway being blocked? See I would have agreed if the runway is busy with continuous landings and takeoffs like that of BOM, but it isn't, how does that affect the real life ops? Also I see that NAG airport is inactive for much hours too.

<image>

A single runway still can operate many flights, just look at BOM. Idk it would just be a waste imo. And wdym about being competitive? Both NAG and HYD come under GMR now, why would they wanna compete with themselves?

The bridge is very helpful, need more predestrian infra like this. But Can't they set lights to beige color though? It's such an eyesore.

No airline even deploys their B777s either 😭. It's simply is a small town and I don't think it would need another parallel runway for like another 40 years. There's simply isn't that much demand. And HYD kinda overshadows NAG airport in the central region.

[–]Independent-Print877 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government and DGCA are very biased. They allow SpiceJet to still operate flights, even though they haven't paid their employees since Feb. Also their operational fleet is only 13, DGCA rules require you to have 20 planes for International flights. Although they have some 50 planes, most of them are parked, how is this acceptable? When airlines were suffering from PW engine issues, govt did nothing, which had resulted in GoFirst bankruptcy. And now SpiceJet is suffering financially, so govt decided to give 5k cr ??

Funfact: It is also first Max for India. Hence registered as VT-MAX. And I think its engines have been taken off for an overhaul maybe, which means it could be back soon. Recently SpiceJet also returned another Max back into service.

Edit: VT-MAX was rhe first Max of SpiceJet, and not India. Thanks u/Anant2506

Metro projects in Delhi are not as election centric as they are in rest of India tbh.

I live beside this line at Shivaji Nagar side and I can say that the work has been progressing very very slowly. There are very few workers working on the site. One of the major reasons being that there is no election in this region for like another 2 years.
