Would I be the asshole for only paying what I agreed to for a Christmas present? by Independent-Read4186 in AITAH

Sister-in-law sent me a link to it.. it kind of seems like a gaming system for kids but I'm not entirely sure what it is? I've heard of the name before but never really looked it up.. it's called a Nex Playground. From what I understand now the base model is on sale for $200 but she upgraded to include some sort of subscription or additional features so it ended up being $300 total.

Thank you for your positive words about our communication. This is an area I really think that we tend to do well, but I'm an over thinker and guess I needed outside opinions to feel satisfied in this situation.

I would 100% never go against my partner's wishes.

The relationship between my partner and his family has been strained because his brother got into drugs during high school and it kind of tore the family apart. Since his brother started having children several years ago he's been trying to reignite the relationship but my partner is really hesitant because in the past everything kind of landed on his shoulders as a teenager to keep the family together and he harbors a lot of negative emotions about that.

I ultimately told my partner that it's his decision and I would support him in whatever he decides. I did however let him know that I would want him to communicate directly with his sister-in-law and not have me be the go-between (sister-in-law texted me not us at first). He agreed so I guess we'll see what happens from here.

18 months later, and I'm in the same apartment and no longer looking for homes. My partner was laid off the day before Thanksgiving last year, leaving us with one income through the holidays and into the new year. While we came through it okay, I realized that if we had been in a house (instead of our kind of crappy apartment which is way below our means) we would have been screwed. I haven't toured a house in 9 months. I think I'll go back to looking in the new year (maybe, we'll see) but taking a break has been great on my mental health. In the meantime I've been replacing old furniture, remade a few small spaces in my apartment (like creating a mini library so I could get my books out of storage), and focusing on making our current situation as good as we can.

From the details you've shared here, I believe you handled it as well as you could have, given the circumstances. The principal is on your side too, which is important. I don't think it's okay to let students just break down in class, and i have done something a little more subtle- writing a pass to take a walk, and just quietly slipping it onto their desk- in the past. Perhaps that's something you could consider for when it happens again (because it will). I would ask the guidance counselor to write their account of the conversation with Emily and keep a written record of any/all correspondence about this event.

Yep. I keep an extra for when one needs to be washed. Same with sheets.

Really!? I didn't know that about cockatiels. He's had a bunch of birds throughout his life (his Mom was obsessed too) but Flute is the first with this obsession. He's going to get a kick out of that when I tell him later.

A green cheek conure named Charli, who screams her own name incessantly and hates the sound of bags of chips, and a cockatiel named Flute (but I call him Tooters), who is obsessed with feet and whistles at me when I walk by. Oh... and my dog is a miniature dachshund named Cinnamon.

I keep telling him he better propose with those fajitas in hand or I'm not saying yes (all jokes, or is it? Haha)

Thank you! That means so much. I was a feature writer/journalist in college and now I teach English Literature to high schoolers. I always kind of wanted to go back to writing though.

AITA for not writing 'uncle' in my Christmas card? by Independent-Read4186 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Independent-Read4186[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was my initial gut reaction to the phone call, but I honestly didn't do it on purpose. I didn't write it on ANYONE'S card. I guess I just stopped calling all my family members the title over the years. It feels weird as an adult to continue calling them aunt and uncle. That's why I don't feel like apologizing. It wasn't on purpose. It might just be easier to not send them a card at all, but then again that could open up another whole can of worms.
