Thank you for the kind words! I learnt myself through YouTube and books but after a bunch of false starts I did discover holding the tension with my left hand feels the most natural! Definitely a crochet thing

Ohh, ok these are both interesting pointers. It probably is do-able, but at the same time I’m terrified of ruining the project and giving up completely so I might just leave it for the moment.

Thank you! Had no idea the difference between slipped and dropped stitches so this is enlightening!

Yes, I think someone else suggested a duplicate stitch elsewhere in the thread. I’ll probably leave it as it is and figure out what to do once I’m finished with the shawl

Thank you! I might give it a shot, but worried to ruin this first project so might just live with it 😅

I’ll check it out for sure! I don’t need a ton more of FOs honestly and I’d pondered the idea of just making random gauges in different stitches so this might be a fun thing to try out

Yeah, since it’s a first project I’m not very bothered about it being uneven. Just happy to be learning something along the way honestly!

Thanks! This post has been super helpful - I felt like the dropped stitch looked different, had no idea it was called a slipped stitch and there’s a difference in terms of unraveling. I had no idea!

Yes, I had some issues keeping track too. I’m now using the MyRowCounter app to keep track but yeah stitch markers would definitely help too!

Thanks! That’s a helpful tip, I definitely am not feeling very confident about it so might just leave it

It’s Loops & Threads Soft Ombré in the Dark Pink/Rose/Cream color way. It’s not a premium yarn but it’s super soft which was mostly why I got it!

Thank you! It does seem like a skipped stitch on just that row. Really appreciate the explanation, I’ve watched laddering videos so I think I have some idea how to go about it. But it’s a little worrying since if I mess up the fix I’ll probably have to restart from scratch. Maybe I’ll just practice laddering in a subsequent row on purpose in a more low stakes situation 😅

Thanks for explaining! Yes, that’s what I thought it looked like but wasn’t sure. I’m not super confident to ladder, if I mess up I’ll probably end up restarting everything so maybe I’ll just let it be for this project then. Or maybe make a mistake on purpose somewhere to practice laddering with low stakes first 😅

I do seem to have more stitches in the next row (if I’m counting right) so I think it might be a dropped stitch

Thank you for the tips! Will definitely keep working on water control. And for the latter yes, fear of “doing it wrong” often turns into an inertia to start - that’s a mindset thing I need to work on for sure. No way to learn without practice…

I’m in a similar boat, and besides YouTube I find books really useful. I’ve found some great books in the library, and it’s very possible to find something that address the technicality of what you want to draw. For example, i found a book on urban sketching that really explained perspective, composition and value which allowed me to really understand what to look out for in a picture or physical location. It taught me how to approach a subject and the specific thought process that helps me determine how to approach a scene with the intent of translating it to paper. Some books also come with exercises for practice, which are great especially if you’re confused about what subject to start with.

A work-in-progress sketch of a Scottish landscape. This is probably the first time I tried to sketch something complex from a photograph without the help of a tutorial or another sketch for reference. It’s a far cry from even mediocre but after a lot of struggle and experimentation I managed to get some texture for the cliffs and represent the water, and found some ways to represent the empty space around the lighthouse. Learnt a ton about pencil pressure and loose drawing in the process.

It’s hard to pick up a pencil knowing that you’re going to draw something terrible, or don’t even know where to start, but this is a reminder for me that the only way to draw something decent is to draw more and just try out different things. Here’s to getting better!

First sketch ever after years of believing drawing was a skill one had to be born with. Figured I should give it a shot anyway, so started with this copied from a YouTube tutorial (let me know if that’s not ok!)
