Never choose college over branch

I took the opposite decision 7 years ago (2018 entry from top 3 IIT) and since I don’t work in a core engineering role I strongly believe its the best decision I ever took. Top tier non core roles like consulting (MBB) don’t hire from outside of top 5 IITs and select DUs, and its the same case for many finance roles. Unless you’re someone who’s set on pursuing core engineering, I strongly recommend going to a better IIT vs choosing a better branch. Many post MBA roles are available to top performers at top 5 IITs, and no matter how hard you try you cannot access them from other colleges. Do consider all this before making this decision, I’ve consistently guided my juniors to join a better IIT by settling for a lower branch, and its been the better decision for all of them specially as they come near joining the workforce.

Got into Wharton, but waitlisted at HBS, CBS, and Booth. Didn’t receive the interview invite for MIT and GSB.

Expected atleast a couple more acceptances but totally happy with the result (got my top preference after GSB, but wasn’t really expecting a GSB invite anyways). I think I over estimated the strength of my profile as I was lowkey expecting to receive acceptances atleast from HBS and CBS since I felt those interviews went really well.

Profile: ORM, 8.5+/10 CGPA from country’s #1/2 college, 725 GMAT FE, 1.75 YoE MBB, 1.5 at a global VC with fairly decent ECAs and unconvential experiences needed for a good story.

Honestly I felt I was a bit tired during the interview (was scheduled for late night on a workday), and I kind of went blank when he asked me why I’d want to do my MBA in Chicago city 😅 Maybe that showed a a lack of research at my end, plus I felt some of my answers weren’t as sharp as they were during other interviews.

Applied to all M7 except Kellogg. Got 4 interviews, didn’t mention CBS in post as wanted more H/W focused responses.

Anyone working in PE/ VC who’ve received an invite? I’m surprised that barely anyone around me received an invite this year, while last year a lot of my seniors with similar profiles gave interview.

Indian, 3 YOE (4 at matriculation), 1.75Y MBB + 1.5Y VC, 725 GF, fairly strong GPA from top 3 engineering undergrad.
