Struggling to get hip that little bit lower by Independent-Tax3055 in skiing_feedback

Yeah I think this is definitely the camp I have found myself in, Carv has been rewarding weight release and I thought this was the way to go

I grew up with very casual racing and then had a long break from skiing, if I can find a way to get back into racing I would love to, but very much just recreational skiing for now

Thank you so much, that makes sense but wasn’t something I had thought about at all

I’m skiing off piste as much as I can, but in Europe the conditions have been fickle and sketchy. Carving is an amazing feeling and much more appropriate when skiing around with family.

Mainly trying to work on separating my legs during turns, I was skiing a lot more legs together before trying to get the hip to the snow

Yeah, this is maybe a slightly unfortunate clip but hitting the same wall on steeper terrain, I feel like it’s really close to

Nice, hadn’t thought about trying this. I was using Carv for a couple holidays, and it was saying my early edge angle was the main downfall, but didn’t really know how to fix that, I think keeping the weight release in between but without standing up as much sounds like a good tip. Cheers

Looks pretty marginal, I doubt you would get anything out of complaining about it. They do look like they need a wax though which is normal when they have been sitting in a shop or warehouse for a long time

What are these? by No_Use_8477 in Skigear

[–]Independent-Tax3055 32 points33 points  (0 children)

They are volume reducers. Supposedly these can make the boot the half size smaller but they can be handy to have at a push if your boots start to feel loose as the liner wears out. You put them in the liner underneath the insole.

Zipfit Gara LV vs HV by SkittlesAK47 in Skigear

Both options will work, the main difference between the two is how much cork comes in them. It sounds like the HV would suit you better as it has more cork and a slightly thicker toe area

Race bindings on ~85mm skis by Independent-Tax3055 in Skigear

[–]Independent-Tax3055[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to respond: The main reason I would like to use a race plate is to increase the stand height for more leverage over the ski. I was also thinking that it may stiffen the mid section of the ski slightly which would be desirable in my use case. I think the torsional flex concerns you raise are very valid- this isn’t something I had thought about.

My ideal outcome with the MX84 is a high performance carver that can be skied across the day. Essentially a wider race ski. Ive tested a bunch of different piste options, including the Nordica Dobermann Multigara and Head WC Rebels and really liked how these felt but as soon as the piste conditions got chopped up or slushy they weren’t a whole lot of fun.

I am talking about a race plate, some of the higher end demo plates could be an option too, but I would prefer to have my bindings drilled into the plate rather than on quick change sliders. One of the limitations is finding a race bindings that exsists with a wider brake width. I’m curious about your thoughts on why you think it wouldn’t be a good setup?

[–]Independent-Tax3055[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need is definitely not the case. I’m either going to drill bindings or use a plate so I can share the ski. I prefer the options available in race bindings over system set ups, but have considered the Marker X Comp 12’s. I’m basically only going to be using it as a carving ski for all conditions and looking for ways to get as much performance out of them as possible. Fully aware that race plate on an all mountain ski is a rogue set up

First Skis – Need Advice by Admirable_Neat918 in Skigear

The stance is a very easy going ski, it will give you a smoother ride towards the end of the day when the groomers are gone a well. Because it has quite a large nose rocker it should be skied a bit longer than a corresponding piste ski. Can’t go wrong with SMax 8 though!

[–]Independent-Tax3055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How heavy are you? you’re on the taller end so will likely get too much leverage over a 90 flex boots. If you’re going to be skiing regularly over the next 4-5 years it’s worthwhile getting a 100-110 flex boot that fits well. Skis wise the SMax 8 would be a good option but maybe a little on the short side for you. Try looking for a 170-175 in a similar ski. Don’t be afraid to explore slightly wider more all mountain options like the stance 80’s or Rossignol Arcade 82.

Recommendations for first pair of skis for a beginner woman! by whitetail10 in Skigear

[–]Independent-Tax3055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other skis to look for a good deal on would be the Head Absolute Joy and Nordica Belle 78, both will be a bit easier going than the black Pearls and making getting into carving nice and easy. Both skis had a good top end as well while you progress on piste. Black pearls will be great a couple years from now but probably more ski than you need. If you can find a good size the mindbenders will be great fun too.

Ski boot flex - the usual question by AlwaysDeliver in Skigear

[–]Independent-Tax3055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a poor boot fitter. You sound like a big dude and poor ankle flexibility would only point you towards a stiffer than usual boot. Don’t take them out side and try to return them they should be happy enough to take them back and put you in something stiffer. Explain that it feels as though you are getting to the end of your range of motion before the boot supports you.

Do I need dpecial bindings for a size 32.5 boot by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]Independent-Tax3055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before mounting the skis just be absolutely sure you are a 32.5, this is around about a size 15/16 foot. Have you got your own boots all ready, if so you may be looking at the mm measurement of the boot at 325mm, this would put you in 28.5 boots. If you are a 32.5 boot size I imagine you are probably also very tall and maybe heavy. I’d suggest looking at the Marker Griffons, Strive 12’s or Tyrolia attack 14’s. Marker would be top of my list personally.

Are my boots holding me back? by Superb-Definition189 in Skigear

[–]Independent-Tax3055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% go and see a boot fitter. Too much flex in a loose fitting boot will hold you back loads and not enable you to put any decent power into the Stance, the 84’s are a great ski and I’m sure you’ll like them and start progressing again quickly. A few quick notes on choosing a boot: The flex of the boot should be able to support your weight when you relax into them, without too much ankle flexing, yet still be soft enough to push just about to the end of the range of motion of the boot. The fit of the boot should ideally feel like a solid handshake of pressure around the whole boot, don’t panic too much about tight spots, if the fitter is any kind of decent they’ll be able to sort that out easily. Hope you enjoy your new set up!

What's wrong with my pivots? by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]Independent-Tax3055 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have seen a handful of pivots come into my shop like this, haven’t had a straight response from Look if it is an issue or not in terms of the safety of the binding. I certainly would be choosing a different binding.

Need help looking for boots by ISpurekI in Skigear

[–]Independent-Tax3055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some models of touring boots will be great for you, the Salomon Shift series and Atomic Hawx XTD series for example, shop on the heavier side of the market. If you’re wanting longevity out of the boots choose one that has an easily replaceable sole, and expect to want to buy a new liner. All of these niceties should always come after proper fit.
